an amazing proof two cent piece

15 posts in this topic

here is a coin that is simply just a stunning coin in my opinion

NGC pf66 red brown and is a true superb gem++ coin at the upper end of the grade if not better

flowerred.gifthe image barely does justice to this coin flowerred.gif

usually proof two cent pieces are seen as rather unattractive coins that have at best average eye appeal and dark brown surfaces and the dates most frequently seen are 1869 to 1873

this coin for an 1865 is quite unusual as the 1864 and 1865 proof two cent pieces are most frequently toned down being dark dull brown and muted

not so with this coin! 893whatthe.gif

as in person sight seen this coin has mile deep mirrors with clean clear non-hazy/cloudy mirrors and amazing flamed.gifcolor devil.gif

the toning dot seen at 1 pm on the obverse rim is not so dramatic in person and is blue

there are no hairlines stains or nicks on this coin

it would never be designated as a cameo but the devices are in stark contrast to the fields flamed.gif

this coin is a total knock out in person and really should not exist

as not only is this coin technically superb gem grade thumbsup2.gif

but with the special contrast between the devices and the fields thumbsup2.gif

combined with amazing color devil.gif

and the date 1865 thumbsup2.gif

makes this coin the highest degree and magnitude of scarcity 893applaud-thumb.gif

this above coin is not original mint red on the obverse it is toned fire engine red flamed.gifflamed.gifflamed.gif

and the colors both obverse and reverse are more vibrant in person sight seen at any angle in any light

and even though you can't really see it in the scans of this coin it is a plain 5

with the usual die chips on the obverse in the motto IN GOD WE TRUST one at the botton left of the W in WE and the other die chip above the R in TRUST

Wow, Michael, hands down that is one of the most incredible and awesome coins that I have ever seen, period! Anyone is dreamin' if think that mere bid can even come close to the value of this beauty!

And think what my reaction would be if I actually saw it in person instead of your photo!

Uhhh, Michael, Victor and Mark are that way because they have peace of heart from being caregivers and friends of dogs. (Altho' I think Victor's "dog" is a bit too big and more like one of those megabeasts that is an ancestor of the modern dog!)

PS Ain't my girls cute? (Look at my sig!)

an unusual coin for a two cent piece with these colors

especially so with one side red/orange/pink combo and the reverse aqua blue with some highlights like the colors on the obverse

now these colors would be uncommon like this on a proof lincoln cent from the 1960's on up and then to have the two distinct colors on both sides really rare!

this proof two cent piece is the ultimate with this look as the coin back in 1865 would have to had been put away many many decades and left like this besides having being put in storagre when it was full blazing proof red to get colors like these and with the storage techniques back in the middle 19 century it is amazing it did not turn dark brown with dull surfaces

it is too bad this coin is so underapprecaited and undervalued as such because the same scarce lincoln cent/buffalo nick coin with the pop of this proof two cent piece and with this overall monster look and grade would be priced close to $25,000 easy if not more............

Michael, this is a great post, and a wonder coin. You have really enriched my appreciation of coins in general and reading your posts is always exciting with such beautiful coins. Thanks. Copper can really lend itself to beauty, and two cent pieces can be totally fantastic. This two cent piece being the nicest I have ever seen.

Looking at that coin makes me want to start and collect older coinage than the newer modern ones. That is a really beautiful looking coin. Congratulations on your prize coin. 893applaud-thumb.gifthumbsup2.gif
