Is there really an error in the 2003 proof set?

9 posts in this topic

If you spend enough time on the internet, which I tend to do, you see a lot of people selling or discussing an error involving the "3" in 2003 on the coins on the proof set, as well as some other error on the other coins. Is this for real, or is this just the way the coins were made (cant really call it intentional)?

Jill,

I have tried my best to "see" what everyone else is seeing in these PR sets. And although there is a slight "disappearance" to the 3 on the cent and the Sac, it is only when tilted in a certain way for an angled view. Upon closer examination, the 3's appear to be just as well struck as the 200- part of the date so don't really know what to make of it. IMO, this is just a matter of seeing what you want to see.

I think that the errored COA's mailed out from the mint with the 2003 Silver PR sets are more desirable, as this is something you KNOW the mint screwed up on!

David;) And welcome to the forum!!!!

I noticed a few people selling 2003 proof sets as containing a "rare" "vanishing three" mint error. It bothered me that some people paid a lot of money for a very common coin. The three appears to be not as frosted as it should be.

I have pictures on my website here.

Hey Die crack,

That crack was mentioned in Newmismatic News not to long ago. Nice Coin. I collect such errors. I have two of the other type of die crack on the Sac where the crack is at eleven oclock. popcorn.gifpopcorn.gifpopcorn.gifpopcorn.gif
