Opinions please, 1927-S SLQ ANACS-50 (not mine)

9 posts in this topic

I've been looking for this coin for my personal set for a long time. I want one that's struck above average and strictly non-unc (my current coin is a lustrous VF-30, but weakly struck). Heritage "Exclusively Internet" Sale 24043, Lot 13350 appears to be such a coin in an ANACS holder:

1927-S SLQ, ANACS-50

Your opinions, please? I know it's tough to judge a coin from a scan, and frankly, it scares me to bid high on a coin sight unseen. It's already at $850. What do you think?

Thanks!

James

The strike does look pretty good, but I would agree with Lanlord that it looks cleaned. I probably wouldnt grade it au either. But with a scan you cant tell the lustre. It very well may be lustrous and all there.

The sharpness looks like it's OK for the grade, but the coin looks dull. The trouble is you can't tell from a scan or picture when it comes to luster. The piece may have enough mint surface in the protected areas to qualify for the AU. Or it may be totally dull and therefore no better than EF.

Chances are it's in an ANACS holder for a reason. And usually that reason is that the owner got a better grade from there BUT don't take that as a blanket statement.

What is Heritage's rule on sending a coin back? Do they have a return policy?

Just curious. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I believe I would have to take a pass on this particular coin. In my opinion an AU-50 it`s not. I`d give it a solid EF-40 but that`s about it. Of course this is only a personal opinion. I would suggest waiting for another to become available with greater technical details for the grade you seek. Resisting the temptation to add a particular date or variety to ones collection is difficult to say the least. But, greater satisfaction comes with the confidence you have in a purchase made. wink.gif

James ; The 27-s is noted for weak strikes. I see some weakness in the shield that is caused by wear and not strike and the left wing also has wear. I would grade this coin as a 40-45 depending on luster. Hard to see luster in the photos. AU-50 is real generous on this one in my opinion. I doubt if it has been cleaned because ANACS catches that regularly.

It is still a nice coin. I just don't think you would be happy with it.

Just my opinion.
