If you ignore the restrikes, I think the rarity of the PF half cents are almost on par with the large cents... I.e., Original PF large cents are also exceedingly rare!

The classic reason that is most often cited is that there are so many breaks in the half cent series. There were no coins from 1812 to 1824 and additional gaps for 1827, 1830 and 1837 to 1839. So far as most collectors are concerned there are no coins from 1831, 1836, 1840 to 1848 and 1852. Coins were issued, but many of them are restrikes, which causes confusion, and the coins are all rare and expense.

For the large cents one can build a continuous collection for all years from 1793 to 1857 with the exception of 1815.

I'm just getting started with my study of the half and large cent series. They fascinate me. I will never afford the proofs or the high grade material, but I will always look with as discerning of an eye as I can develop. Time will tell.

I'll say this much, I would absolutely love to own one in my collection. It would be a fascinating coin to possess, either half-cent or large cent. The only thing really stopping me is one of those coins will cost some very serious change.
