1881 5¢ Newfoundland - Counter Stamped or Damaged

4 posts in this topic

Hi all, here is a coin that has been some what elusive to me. There are a few Newfoundland coin holes in my collection and up until this week the 1881 5¢ Newfoundland has been one hole that has existed for years. I won this coin for a ridiculously low price but was prepared to spend a considerable amount just to fill the hole.

Newfoundland 5c Krause #2

Weight: 1.1782 g.

Composition: 0.9250 Silver .0350 oz. ASW

Mintage = 40,000

The reason I believe that I won it for almost nothing was that the coin is counter stamped. I will be pleased with an NGC details VG or Fine (most likely a VG) but I am very curious about the counter stamp. I have seen in the past some counter stamped Canadian Maritime coins but can not find anything on line about them.

Does any one have any information on the counter stamping of Canadian Maritimes? Is this coin one of those legitimate counter stamps or is this just a simple damaged coin.

Have a great day

Jim

WHOA! The coin above was obtained in February of this year, still have not submitted it, been way to busy with life. BUT....... I found another (an ebay buy) Newfoundland coin with the same counter stamp. That is assuming it is a counter stamp. I still have not found any information on counter stamping of Canadian Maritime coinage.

The attached photos are of the second coin I now own with this strange counter stamp.
