Long lost "brother" found!

I was searching thru Heritage latest auction for MS FS Jeffs they have up right now, and came across this 58-D in 67. Did the pan/zoom of the reverse and there it was! A die crack EXACTLY like the one on mine!

Here is the one at Heritage. Do the pan/zoom of the reverse and see the die crack.

And here is mine!

And the reverse with the die crack!

Imagine my surprise at seeing this---what are the odds?

Who has the better grade? Theirs is a 67and appears 5FS and mine is 6FS.

David;)

P.S. Anybody got any idea how much a 1968-D MS66/67FS Jeff would go for?????

Thanks Tom! I think it has a shot at a 68! Nice, soft orange/gold tone with PL fields AND 6 solid steps! Two little nicks to the collar are the only distraction. I think mine was struck earlier (but not by much!) as it has a stronger strike of the Monticello, especially the pillars and windows in them.

Am going to watch the other one and see how much it goes for. I may slab mine sometime down the road, but am happy with it as it is (for now)!

Leo, there is one just to the right of the main one and just to the left of the first pillar. You can just make it out in my pic above. The other is very small and on the opposite side of the building running up between the two windows all the way to the top. If you know of others, point them out for me.

As far as what caused them---gee, I think it might be die cracks? grin.gif

Yours, mine and the one at Heritage are all "family" as they were all struck fairly close in the early die stage. Yours looks to be as strong a strike as mine and I can see a 6-6- steps for P1 and P2. Does the sixth run all the way across like mine?

You are correct! Here are some pics. There's another! The long pic of the Monticello is to show the strike. It's at the top of the dome. And thanks for the wise crack! 27_laughing.gif

P.S. Couldn't resist the wise "crack", Leo! You have to admit the door was not only open, but off the hinges! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

No, it's a strong 6 steps! It's difficult getting a closeup with the digital camera. I haven't used my Intel kidscope for quite some time.........it actually has cobwebs all over it. 27_laughing.gif

I believe earlier EDS strikes exist, without all the cracks. And those cracks may not be die cracks but rather, struckthru's. Something got on the dies or planchet. The marks are too round and curvy to be die cracks.

Leo, this is a Meade travel microscope my sister got me for Christmas. Meant to be used for slides but will work ok for coins.

These are some of my other "tools".

And did you say STEPS???? OK! Nuthin to it!

Also, still think them die cracks. I wooked veewy veewy cwoswy (my Elmer Fudd imitation) at them and they are all raised as from a crack in the die, not recessed as if something between the planchet and the die. Still, could be wrong and some other explanation for them exists.

How does "struckthru turned diecrack' sound? 27_laughing.gif Something long and thin, like a hair thin wire, made an impression (struckthru) on the coin and die until it dislodged from the die. The next few strikes subsequently will show a raised line. IMO, diecracks zig-zag as they make their way to the rim but that long rounded line suggests something other than a die crack.

And as for your microscope, I'll be looking it up on the internet. Was it expensive?

Leo, you may be completely correct on this---we may never know! But knowing one like ours went for over $3300. is nice!

My sister got it for me for Christmas---don't know its cost. Sorry!

I just bought one at: http://www.samsclub.com for $39.72 plus shipping and tax.

I looked around at other places to buy one and Sam's Club was the cheapest. But one drawback. You have to have a Sam's Club membership. The microscope is made by Digital Blue now. I was amazed at how clear the pictures actually were considering the price.
