Joseph I Glam Rock Thaler

16 posts in this topic

Hello everyone,

Here’s another recent addition to my collection right from the core of my interests, a 1707 Austrian Hall mint thaler:

The guy on the coin may look like the singer from a glam-rock band of the 1980’s but he isn’t! He is Holy Roman Emperor Joseph I, eldest son of his predecessor Leopold I the Hogmouth (by his third wife) and brother of his successor Charles VI.

Joseph only reigned as emperor for six years, 1705-1711, as he died of smallpox at the age of 33. However he did acquire other titles throughout his life, becoming King of Hungary in 1687 and King of the Romans (heir apparent to the Emperor) on January 6, 1690. Joseph had the good fortune to have Prince Eugene of Savoy as his most senior general who led the Imperial armies against France’s Louis XIV during the War of Spanish Succession.

As for the coin, due to Joseph’s short reign his coins are a bit tougher to find than most of the other emperors and bring slightly higher prices. As usual the Hall mint examples, determined by the eagle at the center of the coat of arms, are the most common. I worked a good chunk of overtime recently so was happy to add this coin to my collection to reward me extra effort.

I may try to make this detail into a new avatar (although I'll miss Scalia):

I like this one a lot JJ!

I love the detail of the portrait, I mean just look at the guy’s hair, his coat, wow! The thing that really does it for me though is his wild eyebrows and bugged out eyes! 893whatthe.gif27_laughing.gif

All kidding aside JJ, you added another really cool coin to your collection! thumbsup2.gif

Thanks for the comments! My wife said exactly the same thing regarding his eyes. You can almost hear the music in teh background... Stryper, Great White, Motley Crue, all the greats!

Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about giving me competition as there are far, far more nice thalers out there than I can afford. Besides, I'm thinking of expanding into gold ducats like yourself! 893whatthe.gif

Today I made a nice upgrade to my collection replacing the coin above (currently in an NGC AU55 holder) with this one:

It was a very productive collecting day, in addtion the this coin Greg sold me four other nice additions.

In one of the other threads someone mentioned you know you've made a good purchase when you take the coin out to look at and it makes you smile. This one meets that criterion! cloud9.gif

Must admit - it even made me smile thumbsup2.gif

Before long I'll be able to post a coin that may have an appeal to your taste for Austrian coinage - something from Charles V wink.gif

Thanks for the comment, I'm looking forward to seeing the Charles V themed coin! Perhaps something in gold?

Although he was the mightiest of all the Hapsburgs he didn't have that many coins struck in his name. confused-smiley-013.gif
