A new addition to my early silver commem set!

11 posts in this topic

I just acquired a coin that I am quite excited about. It is a 1935 over 1934s Boone graded MS-66 by NGC. While this coin may not be as recognized for its rarity by some as say a Hawaiian half, this coin has the second lowest total mintage of the entire early silver commem series. Only 2004 of these coins were minted.

The coin with the lowest total mintage for the series happens to be the 1935 over 34d Boone with a mintage of 2003. Although the 1935 over 34d Boone beats the 1935 over 34s for the total lowest mintage by 1 coin, the 1935 over 34s is considered the rarest of the Boone half’s.

I had been trying to find a clean, blast white or attractively toned, eye appealing MS-66 example of the 1935 over 34s for a few years now. All of the coins I have seen had what I consider unattractive toning. I am very happy to have finally found a coin with the ‘look’ I was after. It is blast white with incredible frosty luster, and a strong strike. The obverse is mark free except for a very small tick on Boone’s lower lip, which looks much worse in the scan than in person. The reverse is completely mark free to the naked eye.

I just thought I would share some of the excitement of finally finding that special coin that you have been searching for with the board.

John - As luck would have it, I was just out looking at your commem set! You have an extraordinary set and one that reflects a lot of hard work. You are to be congratulated for your work and steadfastness in building such a fine set of coins. An example for many.

Congratulations on your new acquisition! thumbsup2.gif

John, the more of these beautiful early commems I see (posted here, across the street, eBay, auctions) the more I am pulled toward starting a set of them!

I assume there is an album for them, but wonder if it will hold all issues. Anybody know for sure?

Thanks for the compliment Hoot!

I have been working on putting this set together over the past four or five years and have truly enjoyed it, but most importantly I have enjoyed the coins themselves. I still have a way to go before the set will be complete, but little by little it will get there.

The hardest thing is finding coins with the eye appeal I want. It’s not too hard to find any of the issues in the grades I want them in, but trying to find them with the combination of grade and eye appeal I want is not an easy task.

David, I know that a few different companies such as Dansco made albums for early commem type sets. I am not sure if they ever made an album for the complete year/mint set.

Super coin !!! Congradulations !

With a mintage that low it would seem remarkable to find such a pristine piece. It will certainly make an ideal center piece to your collection. cool.gif

That's a nice coin, John. I think it doesn't get the attention it deserves because it is a multi-mint, multi-year issue whereas the Hawaiian is a one shot deal. Also, Ichabod Crane was never popular in this country. 893whatthe.gif

Thanks Tom.

I agree with your assessment of why the Hawaiian half gets more attention than the ’35 over 34s Boone half, but I believe that there is another more important reason, that being how most people choose to collect these coins.

I believe that most people collect the early silver commems as a type set and not the full year/ mint set. So this means that if you are collecting as a type set you would not need to acquire the rarest of the Boone Half’s, one of the common ones will do, whereas with the Hawaiian half it makes no difference what set you are putting together, you NEED the Hawaiian half.

So even though the Hawaiian half’s mintage of 10,008 is much more than the ’35 over 34s Boone half’s mintage of 2,004 there is greater demand on the Hawaiian half.

P.S. Ichabod Crane never looked so good! grin.gif
