Check the "T" & "C" on your "P" Jeffs

15 posts in this topic

Just finished opening and examining 5 rolls of "P" mint Jeffs. Just incredible to me how bad the Philly Jeffs are! Weak obverse strikes with hits, nicks, scratches and scrapes everywhere!

As to the title of this thread, I found 6 out of the 200 that had this piece of metal over the "T" of UNITED on the reverse.

And found 11 out of the 200 that had this chunk of metal in the "C" of AMERICA, also on the reverse.

Stealing my thunder!! smile.gif

The other thing I noticed on about 2 of 400 P Mint coins was a small die crack (going north/south) on the right side of Jefferson's suit/jacket.

I have a feeling we are going to see some filled dies where the designers initials are the obverse "no fs" in later issues. It just looks very weakly struck.

I'm sorry, Dave! Can you ever forgive me? frown.gif I'll let you report about the OTHER die crack on the reverse---you know, the very short one I found on 4 of the "P" Jeffs that runs from the rim into the "U" of UNITED. If you want me to, I can post a pic of it, unless YOU want to do so?!?!?!?

Well... since we are the only two discussing it... well, I guess...umm... Post your picture before I lose interest in this thread! smile.gif Your pics are better anyway!

I haven't come across any of the extra metal on the "C" but I will keep my eye on it. Have you found anything with the Denver mint coins? I have not but still have a good deal to go through.

If I can get a good pic of the die crack I have, I will post it later, I have a 2 year old running around so it makes it a tad bit hard.

I will also ask you this... The "FS" on the obverse seems to be pretty weak, are you thinking like me, that there will be a no "FS" variety?

Thanks,

Dave

Although I have been planning to sell coins for the past 6 months... and have not, I'm trying to figure out my next step. Do I set these aside? Do I throw them on ebay really quick and say "First Errors Found", "[!@#%^&^] minute man hit Jefferson"?

and then I have two unopened bags/10 P&D rolls that I have resigned myself to put aside for the next generation.

I don't forsee doing anything but wondered how other people might proceed.

Dave,

I am not really into error coins, but I do find die cracks such as the one shown in your photo interesting. However, I would not buy any for the sake of the die crack alone. Personally, I would just keep them for the novelty factor, but if you don’t care to keep them for yourself, put them up on eBay and see what you can get for them. confused-smiley-013.gif

Hey Spy,

I haven't noticed any extra metal on my "C"'s, if you don't find any die cracks would you trade a few die cracks for a few "C"'s to be named later?

Wihlborg,

I like to do things on a lark, I'm thinking about throwing something up on ebay tonight but, who knows. I'm about 150 coins from finishing going through the mint bag I have.

I haven't sold anything in a while and might as well see how it does. Hopefully it doesn't throw this message on the Buy/Sell board as the link is for informational purposes only.

Dave,

After seeing your die crack, I don't want to show mine! No where near as good (or as cracked) as yours is! Very nice specimen, and yes, if you have a second one, I'll trade you a clogged "C" for it. If you don't now but find one later in the bag, let me know---we'll swap a crack for a clog! blush.gif

As for the "D" mint, I found 4 with these double die cracks on the reverse. Running south from both sleeves--one all the way to the rim, the right only half way. Nothing else except the "D"s are running much better in grades then the "P"s by about 100 to 1. Only found 2 worthy of slabbing (67/68 "P") but over 10 for 68+ "D"s.

I still have some Denver mint coins to go through but I'm also heading to my father-in-laws today. I will most likely PM you on Sunday and let you know.

Thanks,

Dave

Here's another one. I found this on Denver minted coins. Check out below the cuff, not sure what to classify it except for a striking issue.
