do you think that the cent should continue after 2009? as the mint is now breaking even in the cost of cent production

if the cent continues would you change the design to an older classic design for a new "change of pace"??

say re-introduce the indian cent? or one of the "classic" large cent designs??

My own opinion is that the US Mint should not issue any series bearing a portrait of a person for longer than that person was alive.

I would hope they get rid of the cent as it is really not needed in commerce today.

I don't want to carry cents around with me. I started placing them in a jar. When that jar filled up I started using another jar about 2.5X the size of the first one. That one filled up. Now I am using a cardboard box that NGC shipped me coins back in. This is one of those big boxes that will hold 60 slabs. It's 1/2 way to being filled. When it gets filled maybe I'll get a trash can and fill it up. They take too much time to roll, too much of a PITA to take to a Coin Star, and I'm not about to carry around a bunch of them to spend.

If it costs too much to make a cent, then either stop or make it from some other material. Make it out of steel or plastic or mud. No one cares.

I would not like them to reuse an old design. All they will do is remove the beautiful aspects of it, give the person spaghetti hair, and flatten it to paper thin size.

I would like to see an obverse and a reverse design change. I would hope that the mint would produce the new design for a period of five years and then end the series or change the metallic content to say ALUMINUM. Then perhaps some of those missing 1974`s may make there way to the market. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

Hi All,

It is amazing, when you think about it, having this design for almost 100 years !!

It is true too, that if they took a beautiful classic design like that VF large cent, it would be flattened and un-detailed....Kind of like putting the chicken through the de-flavorizer before it goes into the soup. As for a design, I have no idea....

Greg, as far as cent elimination....The government is so busy telling us that inflation is .0003 % (even though we know they simply measure the wrong stuff), this elimination would be a blatant admission of inflation. Of course everything would be rounded up to the nearest nickel....Instant 4%.....

Don't we all have those jars and cans filling up?

I'm with greg, kill the cent, it's worthless and it just takes up space in jars and cash registers everwhere. Nothing would say inflation is alive and well like the elimination of the cent, except maybe a CHEAP LIGHTWEIGHT ALUMINUM cent!!! Actually rounding to nickels would only be 2.5c in inflation, since anything up to 2.5c would be rounded down, and over 2.5c would be rounded up. And what can you buy for a nickel today anyway?

Get rid of the cent, and the dollar bill, and use the extra spot in the cash drawer for $1 coins.

Greg, saving that many cents takes alot of time and energy, so apparently you do care. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif About what, I don't know...

I think that the cent design should change but I look for the same kind of coup over the cent's design as happened with the Jefferson nickel. I think that the cent will be aluminum long before it's eliminated. There would simply be too many pi$$ed off politicians and other insufficiently_thoughtful_persons making a racket to let the cent go bye-bye.

I like this idea no more pennys and dollar bills. They should have do away with the dollar bill when they can out with new dollar coin 2 years ago.

I think the cent should be eliminated after 2009.

Also, regarding the relief: I think the Mint should hire real artists, not engineers who don't care about the artistic value of our coins, and start making coins that have at least some real relief, instead of the flat-relief junk that looks like cheap tokens that they are making now. Flat relief makes our coins- and our country- look cheap.
