Flying Eagle cent - Artificial color

4 posts in this topic

I just received back a flying eagle cent (from PCGS) with the designation "Artificial Color." My question is ..... is there any hope of NCS restoring it to a level necessary to get it graded and encapsulated (by NGC or PCGS) or should I just consider the coin irreparably damaged ?

This is likely an unsatisfactory answer, however, I think it best to have NGC/NCS take a look at it and ask them for their opinion on what might be done. Copper, however, is extremely reactive and anything that might have disturbed the surfaces is likely to have really played havoc with the coin.

The fact you sent it into PCGS tells me you at least speculated the color was right and attractive. PCGS will get it wrong, and what a shame it would be to destroy a toned coin based solely on their opinion. Perhaps the color is authentic.

I wouldn't mess with it and would instead holder it in an attractive Capital plastics holder and offer it raw on some format, like eBay.

I'm afraid you'll end up worse off if you attempt to remove the toning, no matter the source.

I have seen these coins with reddish highlights get holdered by the majors w/o problem. Agree with the others re copper. What some unscrupulous people may do is to alter the copper, get it in a holder & unload it before the coin goes bad.

It may look okay for a month or two.
