I was a bit taken aback to see NGC grade this one. (I've asked the question on the "Ask NGC" Forum as to if there is a policy shift.)

This is now my new, favorite Ike!

I'm surprised you didn't hold out for a worse one... wink.gif
I was impressed B&M sent this one Registered.

I had to sign for it and show ID confused-smiley-013.gif. . .

braddick,

That’s definitely something you don’t see everyday! 893whatthe.gif

To tell the truth, I am shocked that Bowers & Merena even had anything like it for sale. shocked.gif

I’ am glad you are happy with it, as that is what really matters in the long run. 893applaud-thumb.gifthumbsup2.gif

It looks like the submitter thought the coin was an error coin. It was submitted under the error service.

I'm surprised and disappointed that NGC slabbed this coin - unless their new policy is to slab all no date coins.

Greg, That's good information. How did you determine that? Is there a way of checking the insert number against the type of submission?

-It'll also be interesting to see what, if any, answer NGC has for me on the "Ask NGC" Forum once (it it does) my question posts.

For cert number 123456-001

The first part of the cert number 123456 is the invoice number, and the -001 is the line number on that invoice. I just plugged in the line numbers around it to see what was graded. Six coins on the invoice and the other 5 were graded as errors. Obviously the submitter thought this was an error coin. You can also only submit error coin on their own invoice, not mixed with regular coins.

How could it have been so worn after only 25 + /- years? Someone must have rubbed that one for good luck everyday. At least it looks like they got their money worth. laugh.gif

While I agree that it's a cool coin, I wonder why NGC would grade a coin that they couldn't identify a date for? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Hey Jeff, I think your JFK half should get the PL designation.

PL=Parking Lot! shocked.gif

Good one Tom, but the funny thing is that it does not appear to be parking lot fodder, but it's legitimately pitted and corroded! Don't ask me how, I just got it from a roll from the bank (I like to spend halves). I had another one, a 1972 that was whizzed, but I spent it! 893whatthe.gif

Tom,

NGC will grade foreign type coins that purposely have no date(Such as some Thai coins that are minted dateless), so long as the coin can be attributed to a certain type and year series. So why not US coins?

I wonder how NGC determined that this Ike was a proof coin? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Makes one wonder how this was so circulated. Ikes just never did, even in Vegas. Yet, it looks like authentic wear. Must have been a worry stone.

p.s. Sherlock, er, um, Greg M. Very impressive detective work!!! grin.gif

Becuase one was minted that way and the other wasn't. As long as NGC is consistent and willing to grade all dateless coins like this, then there should be no problem.

They didn't. PR means Poor as in Poor-1. NGC uses PF for proofs. It's PCGS that incorrectly uses PR for both Poor-1 and Proofs.

Thanks for the clarification, Greg.

p.s. What issue did you decide as a sideline collection?

Dollar sized coins from the 17th & 18th century. Mainly Thalers and Ducatos.

My latest purchase:

Just won it on eBay. Will have to wait to see what it looks like in person.

Neat coin, looks like rock tumbler wear. Would that much detail be left on the eagle's legs from normal circulation wear, with the rest of the reverse smooth? In 30 years? This is a dollar, not a dime.
