Nice coins!

I'm curious as to how you developed an affinity for South African coinage. Is there some type of personal connection with the country or do you just like the coins?

The South African coppers from 1923-60 are my favorite design. Being a British Collector the I already had been attracted to the monarch obverses. Esp. the coins of Geo V. I came across the SAs while collecting 1/2ds of all commonwealth nations. After finding a nicely toned 1923 proof 1/2d and learning the low mintages of these sets it became an obsession. My goal is to attempt a complete set of proof 1/2ds. With the low mintages this will take years to accomplish. I also have a date run of 9 coin proof sets from 1951-1957 and a 1960. Lots of the proof sets display beautiful toning from the mint cases. I have never been to South Africa, only to Kenya.

With world coinage I do not collect as many of you do by denomination, year or type. I collect only those coins with designs that appeal to me. The only thing about British or commonwealth coinage that doesn't appeal to me are the majority of the obverse designs. But the reverses - ahhhhh now that's a coin of a different color wink.gif

For my taste - many of the reverse designs are drop dead gorgeous. While not among my favorites, the reverse design of these is quite appealing. thumbsup2.gif

George V is easily my favorite numismatic British monarch, his portrait is quite regal.

Thanks for filling me in, I wondered how you caught the SA proof bug. Quite sImilar to how I caught the Austrian bug, just liked the coins and found enough value and challenge to keep it interesting. Hope you continue to fill us in on your progress!

Good day,

Love your collection! I happen to collect South African Proof Set as well. I have complete proof sets from 1939 - 2004, and boy did the coins change over the years.

Now, you being over there, and me being over here - I would appreciate some advice on British Colonial Coin Sets. Maybe I can help you with ZAR coins.

I've noticed an increasing demand for the Kruger range of coins ( not the gold ones ) dated back to the 1800's and if you know of anyone that wants to sell a complete set, without wanting my arm, leg, and liver - I'd be much obligedif you would let me know @ mariusdp@ho.netcare.co.za

Cheers!

M

I'm a South African, I might be able to help you source some of your coins. We have a few places around town that sell old proof sets, they're not too costly. I could check in on the years for you .. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I'm told by our local that there were millions of the dimes minted for circulation. I have a couple of them.

Marius - I'm curious.

Our R1 in 2002, what is on the obverse? I found a coin in my change the other day that is a World Summit celebration, instead of the springbok. This is the first time I've ever noticed that. Are they all like that, do you know?
