1857 Flying Eagle - Unlisted Variety?

6 posts in this topic

Hello To All -

Any thoughts in regards to the below 1857 Flying Eagle - is this another variety other than FS # 1 Cent - 003 (obverse clashed die with Seated 50 Cents) or FS # 1 Cent - 004 ( obverse clashed die with Liberty $20).

Any assistance is highly appreciated.

Howdy. The images are a little dark on my screen, perhaps I will try to edit them with my image software. You might want to get in touch with Pushkin or goose3 as these two members know quite a bit about the clashed-die varieties of FE cents.

By the way, did you notice the graffiti in the center of the obverse?

I can't make out a whole bunch but that doesn't look like any of the clashed dies.

looks like damage to me like maybe someone was going to make it into a "love token" or possibly some type of damage from something reacting with it.

Thanks for the response. Some other folks have viewed the coin - they suggested that the raised impressions are part of a wing - couldn't say for sure.

Because the coin has initials, I realize NGC most likely won't accept it for evaluation. However, it's appears the impressions are clashed die related. In regards to the long raised line before/after the date, could that be a die break?

In any event, the impressions are very attractive ..... real exciting to view.
