Washington Experts - How accurate is this PCI Black Lable Grade?

14 posts in this topic

I recently purchased what I thought was a pretty nice looking 1934 Medium Motto Washington in an MS65 PCI Black Holder. I'm wondering what you Washington experts feel as far as the accuracy of the grade (I realize grading from a picture is next to impossible). The coin is extremely lustrous, with a very pleasant gold tone on the obverse surrounded by a ring of blue toning. The reverse is also lustrous, but without the gold tone. A crescent of blue bleeds over to the reverse from approximately 2 O'Clock to 5 O'Clock. The strike appears very crisp, with just the slightest weakness on some of the leaves of wreath on the reverse. As for dings, one very very minor nick is present on the chin, and one on the neck of the obverse (you have to use a loupe to really see them). On the reverse, the only hits are two minor dings on the left wing, Again, really only visible with a loupe. Thanks for your opinions.

Frank, If your photos are accurate, and I have no reason to believe they're not, you've got a superb GEM on your hands. Lots of luster and really, should possibly go better on a submit to NGC.

Neat coin as most of those 1934's are brilliant without the wholesome colors yours is showing.

On my monitor, the top pair of images make the coin look like it has an unnatural color. Are these images more accurate than the bottom image?

Hey Tom:

This is one of those coins that depending on the angle the light hits the coin at you get different looks. the coin has a gold patina on the obverse with a blue ring around it as shown. The picture on top is of the coin more or less head on - very slight angle. The picture below is of the coin with the light almost hitting it directly on.

Wow nice looking coin Frank. The colors remind me of a proof 1942 that I own. Without the coin in hand I wouldn't want to guess on how accurate the grade is, but the grade looks possible.

Frank,

That's a beauty! and that's coming from someone who is not that fond of toning. I wouldn't want to sway your decision but I would probably try to cross it. The worst that could happen is having it returned in the same holder.
