Another SLQ question - did I undergrade this 1921?

5 posts in this topic

By the time you read this, my eBay auction for this coin will probably be closed - please don't think this is an attempt to drive more traffic to my auction item!

I graded this 1921 Standing Liberty Quarter VF-25, with a trends value of about $225. It is not a certified coin. As I post this, the high bid is $291, which is near EF-40 money - for a raw coin! Did I undergrade it?

As mentioned in the auction listing, I just upgraded to an uncertified coin that I grade EF-40 (cost: $325 - it's my personal collection). If in fact the eBay coin is undergraded, then maybe what I picked up is really an AU?

Grading pointers / comments, please!

(I'll post images of the upgraded coin when I get a chance.)

James; I would say you are real close on this one. The 21 was one of the better struck coins in the series. Some dealers would try to push this one off as a XF40.

I would say a strong VF. If I graded it , I would have gone with a 30 because of the strength of the date and the reverse. If you continue to grade these like this, you will get strong bids like this.

It is a nice VF and the bids reflect that.

Have a Good day,

Yes, it is a strong VF a vf30 to 35. Plus it has not been dipped or pollished like others I've seen on ebay. Collectors want a nice one like that so the bids are up.

The 1921 is an elusive date, and your coin is a nice VF 30 example. Ebay has a few bidders who feel that its easier to find a coin that they like and bid according their hearts and not by the "trends" price.

You graded the coin correctly. You also got a very fair price for it.

Don't second guess yourself.

I would have given it a grade of vf-35. Reasons : Nice shield details and full well pronounced date. Many 21`s certified by the top services as being in the lower vf range do not have this much detail. As far as crossing into the ef range, I think perhaps your instinctis were correct . It might have even made ef-40. But , I would rather err on the side of caution. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif
