Las Vegas show report and newp.

I made it to the coin show at the Sahara last weekend. I was lucky enough to meet CU board member ConstellatioCollector (Jim), but apparently just missed KyleKnapp. In my limited experience it's always nice to talk with a board member in person, and Jim was no exception.

As for the show, it was a little smaller than I expected (probably 20-25 dealers), but a few of my favorites were there. As usual there was an abundance of problem coins and several "problem dealers". I found it interesting that my friend who knows nothing about coins could easily pick out the dealers pushing problem coins at problem free prices. All in all, it was worth the price of admission.

I didn't find any of the coins I needed for my typeset, but I did pick up an interesting capped bust quarter (pictured below). It has VF 30-ish details along with some remaining luster in protected areas and some neat album toning probably acquired after a light cleaning (I don't see much in the way of hairlines). In hand the toning around the entire periphery of the obverse appears similar to the area above the cap in the scan while the reverse halo is wider but more subdued. For some reason my scanner is giving the obverse a "rough" washed out appearance, and the color on the reverse scan is... well... not there. 893blahblah.gif

Feel free to post your thoughts on this coin.

Thanks for the report. While reading it, I happened to scan down at the image of your quarter and the first thought in my mind was that the toning throughout the perimeter was likely very similar to that seen behind the cap. It is nice to see that you agree. This piece no doubt spent considerable time in an album of some sort and, depending on how light the centers are in-hand, might not have been cleaned at all. It looks like a nice coin! smile.gif

Tom, in hand the centers look just a little bit too light to me, and the dealer said as much when I asked him about the coin. As much as I like the idea and appearance of original coins I can live with a coin like this having survived over 150 years with only a light cleaning while acquiring some positive eye appeal in the process.

i agree with tomb and also for me it is a very good coin with positive++ eye appeal

and this is what counts the most the eye appeal!

an undervalued underappreciated great early type coin

Thanks for the report! (Show reports are always my favorite posts.)

Nice Capped Bust Quarter. I see so few of them at shows and I think it has been years since I've seen a decent Capped Bust dime.

BC, I understand (from your thread across the street) that there will be a coin/antique gun show held at the Mandalay Bay casino here in Vegas sometime in the near future.

Actually, I just called them and there is a coin/gun show scheduled for the 18th thru 25th of May. The one scheduled for March is at the Plaza Hotel/Casino downtown over the weekend of the 5th. May not make this one unless I take a day off to do so.

Anyone coming to the one in May, let me know so we can meet!!!
