I'm A Wildman With Big Breasts

6 posts in this topic

Here is a coin I just picked up. It's a German: Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg 4 Mariengroschen from 1688.

The obverse features the ever popular Wildman holding a tree. I'm not sure why he seems to have big breasts. confused.gif The reverse denomination takes up 3 lines and they still didn't fit it all in.

The coin is listed in the 3rd edition of the 17th Century Krause as KM304 (not pictured).

The green on the reverse is due to the scanner. There is none on it.

That's a cool loking coin, both the denomination and the name of the state are quite a mouthful.

The reverse legend translates as "Sola Bona Quae Honesta" = "Only those things are good which are honorable," which kind of reminds me of the non-sense I was subjected to in Catholic school. As detailed on the obverse legend Ernst August was the "Secular Bishop" of Osnabruck and eventually became Duke of Luneburg. Title inflation was rampant during those years: counts became dukes, dukes became electors, electors became kings. Madness, I tell you!

In appreciation of the Duke's luscious wildman man-boobies Emperor Leopold I raised his Duchy to be the ninth Imperial Elector in 1692. His son became George I of England, as well as retaining his German domains.

Cool coins, Greg, thanks for posting.

Not only were the wildman's breasts large, but his legs showed signs of elephantiasis, and that mask and myrtle branch just made him look like a stalker. insane.gif

Great coin, though. grin.gif
