Question re: Coin rolls

5 posts in this topic

My grandma has a bunch of old coins in some sort of roll thing and she's not sure if she should leave them in the roll or open them. Evidentally all she has are dates, nothing else. Are you supposed to leave these in the roll?

Yes, if they are not left in the roll they will explode. This is a security measure made by the mint. wink.gif

Well actually it depends on what she is going to do with them and what kind of coins they are.

Brian,

Depending on the dates, it is probably better to leave them in the rolls. Are the coins circulated or uncirculated? Circulated would be like your pocket change, and uncirculated would be like putting them in the rolls as soon as you get them.

Assuming the rolls are sealed in some way, you might go to E-Bay and check out the coin area for an idea of what these go for. There is a specific category under US Coins for Coin Rolls.

If you can't tell what dates are in the rolls, you may have to open them and take a peek. This can reduce the value a bit if the coins are sealed from the bank instead of handwrapped at home.
