'W' designation and airtight?

12 posts in this topic

As long as NGC is still giving out the W designation, I don't know if they are or aren't, then I would think the coin would again receive the W designation if it still deserved it.

The W designation has been discontinued.

For a reholder NGC indicated that they only print up a new insert if the insert in the current slab is different than what is currently used. I know that they have said you can send in the W coins for reholder to remove the designation, so I don't think that they would allow you to keep it.

On regrade it would likely lose the designation since that designation is not given anymore.

Hi Mauimall,

Greg added "likely" to his statement that a regrade would lose the "W" designation:

On regrade it would likely lose the designation since that designation is not given anymore.

Rick Montgomory is more definite as the holder "would lose" the "W" designation:

Also note that should coins with "W" designations be resubmitted for Regrade, Designation Review, or Reholder, the "W" will be removed in order to bring the newly holdered coin into conformity with our present designation codes.

Thus I stand by my assertion that the defintive answer by Rick Montgomory.

Obviously you didn't know that Greg was- Greg, Official Message Board Ambassador™ in actuality.

Also that Greg was here Years before Rick.

This is not a slight to Rick as he was ,at the time, dealing with the Devil. flowerred.gif

Just found the numerous responses to a NGC/'W' question I had awhile back. . . (I need to learn how to navigate around this new-to-me chatroom stuff!) Thank you for the clear answer(s) to my question - even though it wasn't the answer I was hoping for!

Since the discontinuation of the W , it has taken on a whole new meaning known as the "(W)hoospy doosy" designation! 27_laughing.gif

But seriously, why was it eliminated? No fanfare? To say the least, they're still wanted and collected but not like when they first caught fire! What's the estimate number of slabs that received the "W" branding? Is this worthy of discussion?

Most of the W coins I've seen have since begun to tone, so the W has been useless for me. When they first got rid of the W designation, I figured it was because they were realizing that the coins would not stay White and they might have to conserve them back to White. Now that there are all these toned White coins out there, i wonder if NGC includes them in their guarantee?
