How did this coin get toned like this?

Saw this coin on the 'bay. It is slabbed by PCGS.

 

How in the heck did it get toned like this? It appears that something was placed across the reverse that did not chemically react with the middle portion.

it may be that its 3am and ive been looking at comics all night but i see a purpleish color on obv along with some blues.

 

i dont know realy im just stateing what i see.

There was an album with little plastic loops across the slots that caused this toning pattern on Morgans,. K6AZ used to post them quite often ATS. Maybe he can chime in here--although I don't remember seeing anything from him in a year or so.

I have a Peace dollar with similar toning, though mine is angled about 45 degrees and is not as vibrant. It is in my album collection of toned Peace dollars.

Yes I did see that coin on ebay recently and was wondering the same thing it does make sense with the album
