Need upinion on starting to collect another coin type...?

Hi All;

I have been tossing in my head about collecting another coin type. I gave up fractionals a while back because I could not keep up with it all. My Eagle collection is really doing great. I have my Silver proofs, Gold proofs, and some Platinum proofs. I have put togeather Morgan and Silver sets, and I have all three in sets. The only problem is waiting for the next affordable coin to buy.

I was thinking of maybe lincoln pennies or dimes, just another coin type to pass the time. My curiosity is if you were to start collecting a US coin, what would it be and why?

Thanks,

Steve

Shield nickels. MS64/65. Superb luster, completely brilliant surfaces, and no die cracks.

Gobrecht dollars. Plentiful, no one collects them, easy to find problem-free and dirt cheap.

Silver Roosevelt dimes. Cheap at MS65 and above. Nice coins with plentiful availability and just darn fun to look for. I'm about 85% done with my set and loved every minute of it. thumbsup2.gif

I'd love a complete collection of proof three-cent nickels in PR65 Cameo or better. Sweet coins at a bargain price.

Did you see the complete collection that Pinnacle recently listed and sold as a single unit? It was fabulous and I know the person who put the set together. Each of the coins had wonderful, subtle toning. I think the complete set was listed for around $41k.

Tom, are you talking to me? smile.gif

Man, I would have loved to have seen that!

If this is the set I am thinking of, this was Bruce Scher's "#3 set" in terms of quality. shocked.gif893whatthe.gif

I was kind of thinking along the lines of Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels, barber, mercury, roosevelt dimes, walkers or george quarters, any or all fifty cent pieces. Just don't know what is the most interesting to look for.

I have the dollar collection I want, and since I sold my son's stuff to help him, I don't have any all silver coins to look for. I pretty much have my Eagle coin sets complete. I don't even know if paper would be fun.

The most recent Coins magazine recommended Washington quarters since there is still five years at least left in the program. But, then again, Barbers are not so hot right now so they can be had at relatively decent prices.

Try a nice Grade Complete Lincoln Set including Proofs, Errors (Mainly the DD), and the 1922 NO D, and Small dates... That should keep you busy for awhile... Good Luck

Yes, Victor, that was to you. I realize not that I didn't communicate very effectively in that post. confused.gif

The set was a complete proof set of three cent nickels with nearly all the coins being PF65 or PF66 and quite a few being CAM.

I don't know of the quality that Bruce Scher has for his number three set, however, the grade wasn't what was so cool about the set that Pinnacle sold. The cool thing was that the coins were matched, more or less, and each had lightly golden-bronzed perimeters that turned into pastel blue fields and lightly dusted, pastel raspberry centers. They were quite nice. smile.gif

The person who put the set together and later sold it is a friend of mine.

It was a tongue-in-cheek post. wink.gif

Aahhh, but whose tongue in whose cheek?

IMHO, Barber Dimes are really underpriced, considering scarcity. You can buy nice MS63's of many dates very inexpensively.
