New addition to my Buffalo set!

14 posts in this topic

I just received this coin in the mail today and thought I would share it with the board. It is a 1919 in an old green tag PCGS holder graded MS-65, but IMO it is under graded as the strike is full and there is not one mark on the entire coin. The color and luster on this Buffalo is breathtaking! In hand the coin is 10x better looking than the scan, with bright gold, blue, and purple. cloud9.gif

At first glance it seems too good to be true. The colors on the picture seem somewhat "over-contrasted". I had a pic of a Buff that I posted here recently that had a similar look.

The streaks you see are a good indication of real toning. If they weren't there I'd say the coin had questionable toning at least....but then the picture makes the coin look more "colorful" than it probably is, no? laugh.gif

Jom,

No, the coin really does look like that. Other than adjusting the brightness of the scan to try to show what the coin looks like under a light I made no other adjustments to the scan. There is no doubt in my mind that the toning is original, and as a matter of fact I own a couple of other buffs with very similar toning, although not a vibrant as this one. I have posted side-by-side images of the coin below. The first are scans of the coin with absolutely no adjustments made to it and the second set are the scans I posted to this thread originally.

Now keeping in mind that no scan looks exactly like what the coin looks like when you have it in your hand, the scans that I originally posted are much closer to what this coin looks like in person. Also just for the record, in an effort to try to get the scan to look closer to what the coin looks like in person I will sometimes make small adjustments to the brightness either up or down depending on the coin. Other than that I make no other changes to any of the scans that I post to the board or my registry sets.

Tom,

While I don’t know if this coin was at the Boston show, I did buy it yesterday from a dealer in New England, so I guess it is possible that it could be the same one you saw there. The next time I see you I will be sure to bring it so you can see it.

John - Without being able to see the coin in person, if it looks better than the scan, I'd say resubmit it for a regrade. When you do, say that the minimum grade you'll accept is MS65. If they decide to regrade the coin, they will then crack it and regrade it without the slab. They are then obligated to the minimum grade. I'd say you have a solid chance at a 66 on that wonderful coin.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments about this coin.

Hoot, I am definitely thinking about sending it off to NGC to see if it will upgrade or at least get a star. 893crossfingers-thumb.gif

I am waiting for two more Buffalo’s from a seller in California to arrive that I have high hopes for. From his photos and descriptions they should be very nice. If they are as nice as I hope I will post images for the board.
