Help with this Palestine Coin

11 posts in this topic

That's a cool token! It's listed in the Krause as a Souvenir Mil token (Tn1).

From the Krause catalog: This souvenir, which incorporates an appropriate reproduction of the 1927 1 mil coin of Palestine, was privately created for sale to the pilgrims as a souvenir of their visit to the Holyland. The Arabic translates to "Souvenir of the Holyland". It's not known who produced them or how many were produced.

The value is listed at VF=$100, EF=$175, Unc=$300

Thanks a whole bunch, spiny! Really appreciate it! Now, what would you grade this coin @ given the pics?

John, I saw the "real one" in my World Coins catalog. Was thinking mine should have been there too. Did not think it a token as spiny found out.

David, based on the pics I'd guess it's at least an AU. Can you see any wear on it and does it still have luster?

I have since deleted the pics from the msn site so I attached them here.

spiny, I would have to say that there is still some of the original brass luster here and there amid the toning. All the devices are sharp and un-worn, the fields show no nicks or hits and the peripheral "nodes" or what look like gear teeth on both sides are all clearly visible under 10X. There are many black splotches especially on the dated side in and around the devices that are not a part of the coin but on the coin, like tar or dirt. I'm reluctant to attempt to remove any of it for fear of scratching the metal and/or removing any tone. Would have to do it almost under a microscope to perform this "surgical" operation. The two lines that are visible are part of the coin as they do not go over the devices they run into, but stop there then continue on the other side of it (die flaw?).

Other then the above, the coin is is very good condition.
