The greed of the US Mint - Jefferson Nickels?

28 posts in this topic

The US Mint, in their greed, has now released the 2004 Jefferson Nickels. We are privileged to be able to buy the Spring version and then the fall version.

What will be next – two versions for each year denomination?

Here is the link:

Didn't someone link where the Mint was going to sell rolls of 2003 nickels at some inflated price? Guess that's now a no-go since the new design doesn't hit until next year.

And the coin's still butt-ugly.

I'm glad the Mint will be producing the nickels to commemorate the Louisiana Purchase and the Corps of discovery. I hope still that they will use an obverse different from the current, especially since they are waiting until 2004 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase! 893naughty-thumb.gif The initial idea was to have a different portrait of Jefferson on each of the coins. The obverse and reverse of the Louisiana Purchase commem was originally to be based on the Jefferson Peace Medal. It appears now that only the reverse is based on that medal. I like the significance and history of the design. As for the two coins commemorating the bicentennial of the Corps of Discovery, we have yet to see the 2005 reverse or either of the obverses. Should be interesting.

I sure hope we have a different nickel in 2006 than we have today. The series should be retired.

Yes, and the rolls (and bags) were for sale on the Mint's web site just a couple of days ago. Now I can't find a link to the product offering.

It would be an interesting coin to collect if there were problems with the strike. But as we all know, no doubt, the US Mint has gone out of it's way again, to make sure it has a low relief strike. The coins will be as flat in design as the state quarters. Otherwise, us FS collectors could be looking for FULL BOATS and FULL FINGERS! 27_laughing.gif

See attachment.

This is [!@#%^&^]. First we're told the handshake design was considered not good enough so it wouldn't be used this year and there was no time for creating a new design. Then, what do you know it was too crappy for this year but it's good enough for spring 04?

and by the way, rolls and bags of 03 nickels were available for a wek or two and then they disappear into thin air? Reminds me of the 1999/2000/01 proof sets deal that backfired. Why can't they make up their mind when they're gonna sell [!@#%^&^]?

No [!@#%^&^]. And why can't they make up their mind when they're gonna deliver [!@#%^&^]?

The bicentennial of the Louisiana Purchase will be the first coin. This should have been this year. The quibbling that occurred this fall over the design for this coin was unnecessary and only served to relieve the Mint of having to get another coin out the door in 2003. mad.gif

The second and third coins are for the bicentennial of the Corps of Discovery (Lewis and Clark expedition). That was a two year event, thus the two year commemoration (2004 and 2005). The second year will likely have a depiction of Lewis and Clark rather than their keel boat, which will be on the first year coin.

There are three new coins? Will it be unusual to have 2 coins in the same year?

Not since the state quarters program tongue.gif.

The plan is to have two new coins in 2005 as well. Personally - I wouldn't be surprised to see three. They 2 new designs for '05 already in the works - but they have not yet been approved.

The original plans for this called for a minimum of 5 coins and perhaps 6 over the three year period of '03, '04, '05. But with '03 out of the picture - they have to make up for lost opportunity.

They also raised their shipping rates and changed the free shipping upgrade from a $100 order to a $300 order. If I read their info at the website correctly that is!!! mad.gif Their service level sure has gone downhill as of late. I'm waiting for a price increase on mint and proof sets next. confused-smiley-013.gif

He's right. I was going to post the same thing, but this post covers it.

No the handshake design was approved months ago. It was the disagreements over the obverse design that caused the delays that killed the new 2003 nickel. The Mint wanted to use the bust of Jefferson that appeared on the front of the Peace Medal but the review committees rejected it as not being good enough. (Odd it was good enough two hundred years ago when it was being used to impress and win over the members of a potentially hostile people. And good enough to be acceptable to government officials who had the chance to see Jefferson in person in comparison to the likeness. But I guess todays officials know better what Jefferson looked like than the people who worked with him daily.)

I remembered this as well and wondered what happen to that idea when I saw the designs earler in this thread. I also have noticed in the two articles how they MIGHT make a change to the Monticello when the original design resumes in 2006. This kind of statement only fuels speculation and we won't hear the last of it for several months. 27_laughing.gif
