Picked up a nice decent Capped Bust Half.

Did the best I could to show the color with my scanner. Obverse has some nice iridescent green around the periph with nice luster. But what a REVERSE!!! Colors look like that but the luster just blasts through with great cartwheel. I believe this to be original toning from a Wayte Raymond holder. It's in a NGC holder graded AU55. Your thoughts? I know the scan sucks compared to all the great photo's on here, but it's all I have. I'm going to attempt to post the scans in this thread.

That looks like one heck of a CBH! smile.gif I love it! Do you know the variety? The image is rather small, but I will try to look it up for you.

I agree Tom. The image and the size is much too small for detail. As you know when using a scanner to capture color.... I had to tilt the coin and was more concerned with showing the hard to capture toning.... rather than the fine detail.

I will look it up soon. I bought the book just for this occasion. smile.gif

Thanks for the feedback folks. I found this piece at a small show over the weekend. Was on my way out, seen it and came to a complete halt. Wasn't cheap, but I never find nice original eye-appealing coins cheap. We got's to pay I guess. smile.gif

Another great bustie, Stman. Part of the fun of purchasing unattributed 1827's at local shows is determining the Overton variety. The year 1827 can be tricky to attribute with 49 die marriages, but 23 of these are currently rated at R.4- or greater rarity, which will sell for a rarity premium. Rarity ratings were revised in 1994 and 1998 by the BHNC and published in the John Reich Journal. The "I" looks to be just right of the "T" on the reverse, this will narrow the candidates down by half. Let us know what Overton number it is.

Nysoto, thanks for the info. I have the Overton book and to be honest, seeing so many die-marriages I just got plain lazy or frustrated. One of the reason's I bought the book was to be able to attribute, which I've done a few. I guess I'll just need to sit down for an hour at least and figure it out.

Thanks for all the other compliments on this piece.
