Ao contrario. I don't care for it. However, I'm not going to slam anyone who likes the coin. We all have different tastes, and it is important to respect this fact. But I do not find that half to be the least bit attractive.

Yeah, not everybody will like it... But that one gets the highest honor bestowed on a Franklin... its, "HepKitty Approved!"

I'll admit, I don't really care for toning (though I am quickly learning to appreciate it), but that coin is simply beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing it michael, I can always count on you to find these wonderful coins to share with us! acclaim.gif

That one to me is mint set toning.... not endroll.....

What IS mint set toning exactly?

Is it due to the wrapping around the coins?

Like, what is it, some kind of paper or cardboard releasing chemicals onto the coins surface?

Mike,

Coins were offered / sold as mint sets, beginning in 1947. The sets contained each denomination and mint for a given year and were housed in thin cardboard holders with a layer of paper separating the coins from the outer cardboard and the envelopes which were included. The holders caused the coins to tone (sometimes exquisitely and often anything but) in most cases.

Lucy, I don't claim (or, should I say admit?) to looking at a lot of mint sets or Frankies. But, my thought was that the color on the coin in this thread, was not the result of mint-set toning. The colors and vibrancy are different from just about any mint-set toning I have seen.

Regardless of whether this coin acquired its color from storage as part of a mint set, end-roll toning or something else, it is easily among the prettiest Franklin half dollars I've ever seen.

I don't think its mint set or end roll toning. It looks like some that I have seen from Waite Raymond boards. Whatever caused it, its one hotsy totsy, bebbopalulu (did I spell the right?).

Michael,

Please re-read my post. I don't care for the coin, but if others like it, that's what makes this hobby interesting.

I carefully worded my comments as to not offend anyone who liked the coin and went out of my way not to be condescending. I take pains to not offend people on these boards unless I feel that I am personally attacked, which has happened very seldom in the years I have been posting.

well i learned much about mint sets and franklins and end roll toning on this thread by many advanced collectors and people in the know about franklins

thanks!

it always amazes me how different coins in different series demonations in silver tone and come in all shapes and sizes and how

depending on the coin and where it was stored or how most were stored some coins just do not come with much if any color at all let alone vibrant carnival colors like this franklin!

for example the walkers really never come with colors like this franklin i guess the design played a large part in the way the toning developed on the coin besides how they were stored and issued

i nevewr thought of it about the comment that if it was end roll toned it would be only on one side yet it does look like end roll toning due to the way the paper on the obverse of this coib was crumpled on the coin and yet the colors suggest moreso alboum toning?/

well i have never seen such so i cant say

seems to me either mint ser toning or album>??

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i would say mint set based on my research and observations reading these posts and talking to many people

i think maybe the coin was in the mint set under some humidity moisture and someone removed the tissue over the govt issued mint set as pulling the coins in and out of the envelope in the mint iuused cardboard holders just tore up the tissue and the coin sat in a crinkled up envelope with the envelope? touching the coin them obverse of the coin?

that is my theory

i guess more experience in looking at these maybe one day i will be satified at my own conclusions!

thnaks to everyone for helping me become more knowledgable in toned mint state franklins!

oh and since this coin is a really nice ms66 i bet it came out of a govt issued mintset looks that way to me b ut i guess but i might be right or wrong!

anyway thanks for all the astute answers on here!

i leaned alot and now i love earlier business strike colorfully toned franklins!
