Medallic History of the United States of America 1776-1876 by JF Loubat

Yesterday afternoon I was in an expansive used book store. This is a place where I have purchased many cool books in the past. The place is called The Book Barn and consists of six or seven small barns on a semi-wooded lot. Each of the barns is stuffed, from top to bottom, with used books of all types. There are also about a half-dozen goats on site, one dog and 15 or so very friendly cats. It's a great place.

There aren't too many numismatic books that are ever there, but, I was able to pick up the 1967 reprint of the 1878 edition of The Medallic History of the United States of America 1776-1876 by JF Loubat. This was a very limited reprint of a fairly rare original release. Aside from having a detailed description of each medal issued in the first hundred years of our country, the book also has text of Presidential and Mint Director letters and legislation. The coolest thing, though, is that there are also 170 engravings by Jules Jacquemart that are included at the end of the book! Approximately 450 pages of well researched, historical text is followed by these exquisite, highly detailed and beautiful engravings. It's pretty wild.

All of that for $10! grin.gif

Tom, great find!! I would love to own that book. ANY book on US medals is useful.

If I owned that book store, I would be worried about the goats eating my books!
