Do you every think twice about selling on Ebay..............

28 posts in this topic

no, we never hesitate for the following reasons.

1. i'm an attorney and if you slander me you're going to be served with a summons and it's going to cost you a lot of $$$ to defend yourself.

2. we accurately describe our coins. if they're cleaned, we say so. while we certainly put the best face forward on our sales, we, in no uncertain terms, never attempt to mislead.

3. consider that 99% of the peeps posting on the pcgs boards haven't a clue. what they know about coins & the business could be written on the head of a pin and have room left over for their signatures.

No I never thought even once about the PCGS coin patrol. Are you referring to the folks on the other boards as cointagious suggests in his 3'rd point?

I care what other people think, but I don't worry if they don't like me or my coin. You can't make everybody happy. Anyway I put my name and my reputation out there for all to comment on if they choose. Nobody has said anything horribly offensive to me yet. At least not that I know of.

I quit reading those threads a long time ago. The knowlege of coin collecting seems to be inversely proportional to the number of ebay threads that some members post. To answer your question, no I don't give it a thought.

Just recently I started putting ebay auctions in my signature line and posting on the BST boards. For the longest time I did not want to publicly deal with any ebay problems that might arise with forum members but I came to realize that I alway's do the right thing when a problem does arise anyway's so I might as well get the added publicity for my auctions. I think people on these forums know me good enough to know that I am honest. smile.gif mike

It's really unusual for me to sell things on ebay, but, about 18 months ago, I listed around a dozen coins and they were noticed by users at PCGS. One of the coins I listed had a title something like "World's Ugliest Toned Washington Quarter" and I proceeded to describe the coin in question and listed its attributes. One of the attributes was that the coin had a purple-like, swirling, hazy toning pattern that did not show up on the scan. I think the coin was an NGC MS64 from the early 1950s that had much nicer surfaces and strike than a typical MS64 but had dead luster and not-too-attractive toning. I think I wanted $3 for it. Dog97 started a thread about the coin and folks generally knew it was from me. One or more people wrote that I was probably not telling the truth since they could not see the purple in the scans, however, the board largely gave me some slack in the description since I was a "known" commodity. It ended up selling to a board member who seemed to truly like it when he received it. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

It is not difficult to name plenty that fit in that catagory.

Sort of like this thread???...

web page

Nope it got one person to reply. Across the street there would have been 15 replys and 3 thread spinoffs, but nice try, your flamed.gif PCGS slip is showing.

I take exception to that......I think 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Please don't hesitate to put your stuff on ebay. For some of us, that's the only way we're able to decently fill the holes in the collection.

And I have a clue every now and then... grin.gif

I don't buy any coins on ebay. There are enough other avenues to get decent coins from auctions (Heritage, Teletrade) and I don't have to be worried about return policies. I find the descriptions to be largely without bias and the pictures are usually quite accurate.

for fear the PCGS coin patrol might pick out your listed coin and subject you to abuse and slander? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Nope. I consider myself a good and fair eBay seller and I don't care what a few people might say.

The saddest thing is that across the street they allow some members* to deceive people on eBay (and outside eBay) and are OK with that, but should it be a non-forum member, they'd lynch him. There are a pair of Mr. AT's over their, one of which flat out lies about certain things, yet everyone is buddy-buddy with them. Why no one calls them out on it is beyond me as they contribute little to the forums, yet are liked by many for some reason.

* Please don't ask me who they are in here or a PM. Thanks! flowerred.gif

No doubt about that Greg. They have no problem firing a bull broadside at the unsuspecting eBay seller. Though when one of their own fail to provide an accurate description, sell holders they openly attack on the boards, end low-bid auctions early, fail to provide a return offer or any other "eBay crime" they claim to object to, then they have no problem conveniently turning a blind eye. The lack of objectivity, favoritism and hypocrisy is rampant on "those boards".

Just be honest and if the seller is happy with it then don't worry what they say about it... when you get the money for it then you can laugh about it... if they got that much time on there hands that would mean something is wrong...

Every once in a while I half cringe if I open one of those threads up, fearing one of the coins may be mine. Hasn't happened......YET!

As previously written above me here, I back what I sell, and try to keep things on the up and up. You do the best you can do, and hope to keep the majority happy.
