I love /Hate my scanner

10 posts in this topic

The pics are done with my scanjet 5470c. I wish I could take it with me when I go look at coins.

When I was looking at the coin in the shop 75% of the marks were not visable.

But through it on the scanner and I can see Everything to the 10th degree.

I'm not so sure it's the scanner necessarily, but the enlargment. If you look at any coin with that much enlargement, every little flaw will appear to be a huge problem. One little piece of advice, when you scan coins, canned air is your friend, to get rid of dust particles. Dust particles look like golf-balls on some scans.

Scanning definitely has a way of bringing out minutia and making it look like disaster. Scanners also alter color balance quite a bit and can make for increases in contrast that are out of this world. Hard to control and it makes some subsequent balancing necessary. I really don't like scans of coins, but it's also what I'm stuck with.

Friends don't let friends scan!

Hard to make a call on these images..... I see a Obverse with what appears to be very hit free fields however some hits on Frankie.....The Reverse seems a close but no cigar FBL....

The coin seems a ms64 to me.......

But I agree, a blown-up scan will make a coin look ugly and the hits worse then what they are.........

You know, scans are funny that way. I've scanned gold coins which appeared to cover up the minute scratches etc...and I've scanned coins and 'everything' seems to show up. Lighting is as crucial to photographing a coin as the bow is to the violin. With a scanner, there is little you can do to manipulate lighting to bring out the best in a coin. Don't let seeing those marks get to you. I think James is right too, about the size making it look a lot bigger than they really are. A very nice coin. I'll bet with a camera and lighting, the luster would really come out, and you'll say 'where are all those marks I was so worried about?'.

One more thought. On a scanner, "lines" or "scratches" that run parallel to the light on the scanner, they will be greatly suppressed. Likewise, "lines" that run perpendicular will be enhanced. Try turning your Frankie at both 45 and 90 degrees turn, so the bell lines don't run parallel to the lighting.

I found this technique when scanning high-grade Three-cent nickels. The fine-line details of the Roman numeral (reverse) would look weird unless I scanned the reverse at about 45 degrees, then reoriented the image.

Strange as it sounds, the orientation of the coin makes a difference on a scanner. Just another tip from my battles with my HP ScanJet!

At least you have a scanner. I picked out the one I was finally going to commit to and I went to the store. Two were sold out. One had a line a mile long, and I refuse to wait in line to give up my money. Needless to say I'll be checking some other stores tomorrow. 893frustrated.gif893frustrated.gif893frustrated.gif893frustrated.gif893frustrated.gif
