Is This coin FBL????

15 posts in this topic

I wouldn't buy it as a FBL - upper line of 2 lower bell lines (left of the cracked bell) is not "full" and same is true of lower bell line of the upper 3 bell lines. I wouldn't really care what the grading services said, as it 'taint to me -

But what do I know?

Being very familiar with both NGC and PCGS standards, I would say it is almost definitely FBL at PCGS, and becuase it doesn't appear to have any hits that sever the lines, and because the lines just make being seperated, it is possibly FBL at NGC. I say possible because NGC often missed the FBL designation on obvious FBL coins, so it may not have made it but could easily in the furure. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif Does that make sense? juggle.gif

This coin is a freshly graded NGC 1961p ms64 FBL coin. I doubt it makes FBL at PCGs. This is just a example of really knowing what to look for and not relying on the holder. This isn't meant as a shot at NGC, I have many NGC Frankies and I love them, this is meant though to show that just because NGC has a stricker FBL guideline, they can miss it as well.... PCGs also is guilty of designating FBL coins that really are not there... On the other hand, the majority of the PCGs coins in my 12th ranked reg set had both the upper and lower bell lines full..... Just as every PCGs FB Roosie I have made also has the torch full with no breaks in the horizontal lines...

NGC coins do present a great value, but, as with any grading service, you really got to know your series and buy the coin.....

I would have guessed NOT FBL. But I've been getting hands-on learning from Mad Marty 893whatthe.gif about the fine points of FBL between the services. I only ever collected my Franklins for color and luster, not strike, but am considering some upgrades to FBL.

Sorry, but I don't see Full Bell Lines complete. They look broken and soft strike. Just my opinion. Take a look up close at other FBL coins and see what you think. Heck I guess we all have opinions. I guess it just depends on who is looking at it that day.

My point is not to trust the Designation and study the coin for proper attributions.

I have owned 100's of Franklins and have looked at literally thousands...

FBL for me is very easy to spot. I never suggest that this one was FBL, in fact,

the whole premise of my thread would suggest otherwise.

It is thought by many that since NGC is stricker on FBL that their FBL's are a sure thing, I have seen many that were not FBL in FBL holders. But not to single NGC out, PCGs does the same thing.......

FBL is going to command a premium, check those lines Cats, and make sure

that they are all there, and also understand that some years the lines will be softer and weaker such as the S mint coins and the coins issued in the 60s, but even these should still be full.........

Checkout these SLAM DUNK lines!

Lucy, your question is a very close relative for what is a full step Jefferson. From your pictures, I for one, would say that it is NOT a FBL as there appears to be some bridging (a Jeff nickel term) amongst the lines. Some slab companies would ignore the bridging and call it a FBL as has happened to me with my Jeffersons, but would be very disappointed if I bought it with that designation. IMHO
