Hi all. I recently started following a few folks on Instagram that are dealers and a constant theme is how much we should beware of eBay. Pretty much all my coins have been purchased through eBay. I look up the NGC cert and verify the pictures and won’t buy a coin that isn’t certified. That being said, in your alls experience, even with graded coins, do you find a lot of counterfeits? What else could I do to prevent buying counterfeit coins on eBay?

Just a general question. I’ve yet to purchase a gold coin for my collection. Mostly looking at Indian head $2.50 and the 1849 $1. The thing that sucks is the price point of most of these coins. I can only be a player if the coin is a details coin. So my question for all of you experienced collectors, do the golds hold value over time even if they’re details ? I’ve read a few posts from you guys saying not to touch details coins but wasn’t sure if that held true to the gold coins as well. Thanks for the guidance.

So I'm not particularly interested in the toned coins. Just my personal preference to have them look like they came from the mint. But would NGC certify a toned coin if it's been toned artificially? Also good to know from fellow collectors that it's just a preference thing and not necessarily a more valuable coin just because it's got toning.

Still been creating my collection and I keep coming across people selling toned coins at a premium. Coins that would normally be $50-60 bucks based off of red book, going for 3x that price because of the Coloring of the coin. Maybe it’s just my preference but I prefer coins to look as close to the original state as I can afford. Why are toned silver coins so valued? Am I missing something? Just trying to understand better. Thanks!

Thanks James. I mean i know the history of the shipwreck and I'd like to own a piece of that history I just wasnt sure about the value of this particular coin. I've been trying to upgrade my collection recently after making the mistake of buying a few "Details" coins. But to my understanding, all shipwreck coins aren't graded like most coins (MS,AU,XF Etc.) Most are being sold at the mid 300's at this time but dont really know if that's the actual value right now or if it's an inflated market by a couple of guys.

Hi all, Looking into buying an SS Republic Coin. However, no pricing guide is available. I know a lot of the time with Shipwreck Coins, NGC wont put a numerical value on the grade so I'm having a hard time getting a pricing guide to see if I'm paying too much. Coin appears to be in good shape but i cant get any idea of the value of the coin. Wonder if there's anyone on here who have purchased these coins in the past or currently have a similar coin and see if they could tell me a range of what I should be looking at? Or if I should bother with a Shipwreck coin at all. Thanks

I primarily have been collecting coins for a while now but thinking about dabbling in paper currency. Looking to collect Colonial issue and some Civil war Era bills. However, I'm finding it really difficult to find price guides for these bills. There isn't nearly as much available to compare to as there are with coins. Does anyone here collect Paper Currency? If so, how do you determine whether you're paying too much for a bill and what resources do you use to compare values? Thanks all!

I getcha. I love the coins for the historical value. Was just hoping, in addition to owning history, I was also leaving something of value to my kids.

Are there some details that are worse than others? I always assumed Whizzed or Improperly Cleaned was worth less than the value than a Rim damage or environmental damaged coin.

I gotta say, I'm not dropping huge amounts but was still thinking I was getting a great value Paying for an AU with a XF price. More than likely just paying the value of the coin and not really getting a great bargain.

You're right Ronnie. There is no numerical value. Just the AU/XF etc.
