  1. In my first post I mentioned what you call the flow lines. I called them scratches and I am sorry you could not see them as good on the first shots I posted. Posted Thursday at 02:10 PM So I am trying to improve my Identification skills. I picked this coin up and said I have to post this one. Would you call this Abrasion Doubling it is the same on the opposite of the coin and just on that one corner everything else looks ok. there are scratches in the background like the die clashed and then was rubbed out to fix it. As Wexler's Die Variety's explains I think the background scratches are the determining factor. I think we are all on the same page when we say the Die has been repaired and therefore it is causing the letters to look doubled from reflection or metal flow from Die Deterioration not necessarily Abrasion Doubling.
  2. I thank you for that information I appreciate all the help I get here from all the members. Most of the members tell me buy what you like. I do not plan on touching any of these sets I have collected. I find the ones I like and put them away for my wife and grandchildren's future. All of the sets I have I picked up below market. Most of them never climb very high in valuable, actually a lot of them get lower in price. Sometimes you get lucky and find a sets that people are looking for I know of a antique dealer who had a few of the 1981 type 2 proof sets sitting in boxes for $5 a piece you cant go wrong at that price. Some of the coins do have that haze and may not bring full market value without restoration but for now they look real cool and can hang out at my place until they are needed.
  3. No offence taken. I like to be thorough that is why the microscope is great but you have to do the angle Shots to look at it also, the scratches in the background amplify the image when you look straight on. That is why I was thinking maybe Die deterioration or Abrasion Doubling, there is definitely something going on I can still see doubling of some kind. Here is some more angle shots. This is a tough one to figure out I appreciate you all looking at this . LoL
  4. Thanks for all the good info GoldFinger that sounds like fun , Now that Covid is slowing down they may have a show or two around here. Mass has been a tough state for doing anything with Covid
  5. You guys are all Pro at this stuff... I am just getting going LoL. I have not had a chance to see any shows yet and to buy on line is kinda scary for a new guy like me. But boy do I love the coin shop dealers that don't mind to haggle a deal and have all kinds of stuff to look at old and new. The wife liked the deal we got at the Coins Purse in Nashville the guy sold us the 2021 Silver Eagle for regular price and then I wanted the first year 1986 and gave me that for the same price and it is worth $15 more now. The Dealer in S.C who threw in a $30 Peace dollar because I spent over $100. That is the way I have always like to deal One on One . Tomorrow we have a appointment to get more Eagles. With any luck I can get a deal of some kind at this coin shop south of Boston The wife liked the Silver Eagles so much she told me to get one of every year a Grandchild was born. I said are you sure?? 14 OK ..LoL
  6. Will I am a happy camper today. Normally mint sets don't go up much but remember those sets I bought for $5 a piece well the 1979 type 2 sets went and the type 2 1981 went way up that's cool . 4792 Shop 1979-S Proof Set, Type 1 PR 11 904793 Shop 1979-S Proof Set, Type 2 PR 55 904794 Shop 1980-S Proof Set PR 7 904795 Shop 1981-S Proof Set, Type 1 PR 7 904796 Shop 1981-S Proof Set, Type 2 PR 315
  7. I also was a little leery about the lighting and reflection I always double check. So I placed another of the same coin next to it and that coin was fine. Then I took some upside down shots and some of me holding it on a 45 degree to check and see if the lighting changed it but I can still see the doubling and it is still there every time. Tell me what you think here are the shots
  8. So I am trying to improve my Identification skills. I picked this coin up and said I have to post this one. 9. Looks real cool, is there a scratch under the tail that looks like a 72 or a P or is it just my old eyes seeing things ?
  10. LoL in other words it is just a penny JP . Yes Quintus it is ..Please do not feel I would be offended, for I think of myself as a odd type of collector anyway just look at my posts. Granted when I am roll hunting it is a rarity to find anything without a nick or scratch on it and the water droplets I refer to is what I call the stains the US Mint is leaving on or grows on all the new coins it is some kind of leftover residue that won't wash off. Oh and I came up with the MS 67 rating because in a previous post I showed I bought a roll of worn uncirculated Nickels for $9 so the reason the penny is worth more than 5 bad rolls of nickels is on PCGS price chart it is worth $48 it was $60 ???Dang I missed the boat again. And believe me when I say I would never send a coin in to anyone but NGC and only if It was worth $250 or more. I am a cheap SOB and I won't spending $ unless I get more back
  11. Here is a shot of the 1905 Liberty nickel, Kinda in nice shape
  12. So I stop by my favorite antique dealer looking for something odd today and I see this for $20 LoL I figure at scrap silver it is worth $15 but the Nickel is worth maybe $20 and Ben maybe $11 But I thought it was a funny looking set for someone to make up not sure why nothing matches up?
  13. That is a beautiful coin Jason .. Does it have to be Graded and in a slab to be a 68,69 or 70. Just thought I would ask .I have a commemorative from the mint in it's own case would it be considered MS 67 or higher in anyone here's opinion.
  14. Look what I found not a nick on it maybe some water spots one of these MS 67 is worth 5 bad rolls of 60-D nickels.
  15. I love those Nickels. Got my butt whipped a few times over those. When I was a kid a BIG candy bar cost a nickel . My dad had a stacks of these in a corner of a top shelf in the dining room. Needless to say every so often he would check on them. The piles kept getting smaller. Not sure why ?
  16. Ok ... What do I do when I get there...
  17. Sorry..... I see no listing for a 69-D DDO I see this listing ..1969-D No FG FS-901 and also....1969-S Doubled Die Obverse about 30 known ......There are also 69 with floating roofs
  18. So that is what a Good looking Barber looks like Mr Bill LoL . I was just looking at some on Sunday I don't have any Barbers yet and the shop I went to like most wanted $22 for coins with only a date and silhouettes on both sides no rim and almost no stars. I think you did well for that price. Good deal
  19. I have a 40% Silver set from 1976 Not sure why that was? VKurtB would you know what was the point of 40% USA was short on silver in 76 ?
  20. I remember you telling me one time if I ever came across a 1960 D to grab it . Well I see this whole tube and I said what the hey maybe there is one FS..............Nope... but it's ok It was a fun treasure hunt anyway.
  21. Must be a misprint on that roll of nickel's it should say 1960 D ,REC-irculated Nickel's so I got 40 Buffed out 1960 D some with compound still on them. Not 1 fs most did not have any steps. LoL I am out $7 but I was not surprised just hopeful that someone was not trying to be shady I even told the girl at the cash register at the antique dealer it was a longshot they would be unc coins....These two were about the worst. Have a peek and a laugh
