Welcome Jeremy. I agree with Woods020 if you can show a better shot maybe on a bit of a angle it may show more luster and the scratches you mentioned.

Who is to say, Your coin may be a proof they still made Proof sets in 1964.

In reality Special Mint Set is a misnomer as there were no sets ever made. Some experts say that the coin are merely first strikes on new dies that were kept aside.
Here is a 1965 set .The paperwork says it is a special mint set from the San Francisco mint.

Welcome to the forum. It is old and gray like a lot of us. But still worth every penny

It looks to me the mint has a lot of coins to produce this summer with the two 100 anniversary 2021's and the type 2 2021 eagles and medals and lets not forget the other coins they must have to make. How will the keep everyone happy.

You do realize that the person you tagged made one post back in 2011 and it does not look like he has been back since. So the chances of him answering your post seem very slim.
LoLs funny I did not see that. I saw the thread come up and thought it was new.
And yes they are nice RWB but too much hoopla with the book and all. There asking $60 for it , I may offer them $40 not sure if it will be worth a lot down the road.

you might want to consider moving away from Proof Sets and get you some Uncirculated Sets. That's where the money is.
I am wondering why you say there is more profit in mint sets rather than proof sets? Unless you are breaking up the sets and selling them off piece by piece. I agree that Proof sets do not go up in value much over time. but when I pay $5 to $8 on average it is not a big loss but the quality of a mint set is quite poor. I find most of the time they look like leftover coins from the floor of the mint that have been swept up and put in a plastic wrappers.

The first pages was when I first came to the forum. After listening to the members and there vast knowledge I have a much better grasp on the goings on with the coin word . Thanks for your help Karen.

My uninformed guess is the coin was lightly spritzed with silver paint dispensed from an aerosol can or atomizer. No big deal. In fact, if the silver were real, its application may have increased the value of this expensive-to-produce, intrinsically worthless cent.
I thought so also Quintus but in reality after further investigation it is the zinc your seeing the copper is really that thin that it rubs off .LoL. Hard to believe.

Die erosion doubling is like it sounds. The dies erode and allow metal to flow outside of the intended design slightly.
From the stuff I have been finding like yours Hinkle where it is only in areas they have been polishing the dies . Woods has it

Wow Dollarfan you have some worthy Morgan's there and with a bean to boost. Very nice collection.

Nope, only business strikes. These are proofs. And only P mint business strikes.
Sorry I stand corrected again. I thought he was talking about high priced Susan B's in general ..........

The wide rim coins are only in 79. They switched to this design in 80 and forward. So it’s only rare on a 79. With that said even a wide rim 79 isn’t “big money”. In MS65 I think they are around $30-$40. Circulated like the one posted, even if it was a wide rim which it isn’t, would not be worth more than a few dollars probably.
Sorry I posted that one because it has the rare S I believe these 2 are narrow rim
