  1. It could have been in a roll of quarters that may have been in a fire there may be a impression of E Pluribus Unum behind Georges wig ? or the eagle tail feathers  it may just be a shadow . It is kinda crispy looking But I don't think their is a error PMD I would guess.

I am sorry - I was reading the wrong scale. I'm better cross referencing books than the computer when cross referencing :( Nice looking coin - thanx for the awareness of my error.

That's ok I do it all the time.. it was kind of a joke there are so many variety's and columns in this hobby you can cross-reference all day long LoL.......... No error on your part   Idhall

  4. I think the pandemic was different down south my daughter in TN said it was not as strict. Up north where I am it was a ( paranoia pandemic ) everything closed in April 2020 only emergency workers were allowed out in public for a while. A lot of stores were closed for a long time the food stores had special hours for us old people to shop it was a pain in the you know what. So up here only cards were being used and still are mostly.

I saw my first sign on a convenience store door since being back in Alabama today saying they were short of change and only taking credit card. I immediately thought about this thread JP.

I have a feeling it is not going to get better very fast. With a credit card world no money is needed, heck you can use your phone you don't even need to pull out a card any more. I think the mint is more concerned with making there high end coins and meeting that demand then the regular coins that cost money to make. I am not sure where that leaves us collectors maybe out to pasture or maybe on a mountain top it could go either way.

We also picked up this old PCGS 1902 it is nothing extra special MS 64 it should be a 65 but we all think that way. LoL  anyway it is the year my wife's Grandmother was born and the year my Grandfather came to the USA and Ellis Island

I did find a little green spot on the edge but it looks to dark for PVC damage. The slab case is 20 years old it has been there from day one I would think. Is it anything to worry about or is it time to get the hammer out LoL

Right, I got that.  Maybe it was just use or tired old eyes.  Hard to tell these days.  :roflmao:

Now I don't Grade coins and wholly object to people who do it by internet pictures.  That said I'd agree Jason and say Extra Fine.  That Reverse is very nice for a 170 year old coin.  Good luck with it.  Me, and folks would say "he's crazy" but I would spend a couple bucks and ask NGC to have a look at it and check the Variety Attributes.  Never know - you might get lucky.

I don't think sending it in would change the $ value much Alex, it is the same from G2 to AU 55 . Perhaps a attribution would factor a change, But that would be a question for one of our more knowledgeable member's or DW Lange maybe ?

Appears to be in an old TPG holder.  Maybe yeas or maybe no?   Gold, on Kitco, has been averaging $1800.00 + or - per ounce.  Now your coin is an antique and an 1851 O - Quarter Eagle PCGS AU55 asking price is $1100.00.

Your coin appears to me to have something going on with the date.  Some variety?  or just wear.  Compare to the AU 55 below.  Nice coin.  Gold is always nice even old and worn gold.

It does have a die break on the date and at 9 o'clock  not sure where to look up that info, It is a 1851 no MM or Philadelphia

  9. We went shopping and we got this girl, 1851 2.5 is one of the most common. She is a bit worn out and got a lot of dings and lots of scratches but I don't think it has been cleaned. But in170 years anything can happen . It also has some die cracks . I looked it up and even at G4 it is worth $500 ???   I paid $340 .............Did I do ok today ?  or did I lose today ?

Huh, I had not heard of this either but apparently this RPM has been known for sometime having been noted by Bowers. It's not currently recognized by the major TPGs and is supposedly rare. I've added it to my mental want list and I'll be keeping any eye out for it now.

So what are we are looking for Mike? This is a 1980 Proof set SBA, This is as close as I can get with the scope most mint marks on proofs look bad anyway lol and this is still keeping with the thread I have 79,80 and 81 as a mini collection because of the different mint marks for all 3 years ;)
