  1. This guy . I have read and seen several of his presentations and he seems to be a very intelligent numismatist. Why he wants to fuel the fire of the fantasy error craze, and publish books like strike it rich with pocket change, is beyond me. It’s causing way more harm than good to this hobby. And my oh my the hard lessons to come for some of these collectors spending decent money on these common as dirt coins is going to be a tough pill to swallow. The only way there is a market is to continue to keep recruiting new people to collect them that don’t know better. It’s the ponzy scheme of numismatics.
  2. How about posting decent pics? That would help a lot. And scratches/cuts made on an angle cause a raised area as the metal is displaced at an angle as well.
  3. The old soft pack mint and proof sets have been thrown around and stored improperly for decades now. They are often in poor condition.
  4. I have seen a lot of adult themed silver rounds recently. Some are adult, and some are XXX. I guess they try anything to create a premium on a silver round.
  5. Don’t be embarrassed to ask any question. We love nothing more than helping someone who truly wants to learn. I assure you I have asked dumber questions than you ever will.
  6. That’s why I was hoping someone collected them 😂. I give them away or throw them away. I have no use for a 1972 red book, which is currently sitting on my desk in a pile of others.
  7. The OP must not be confident, possibly wanting someone to make an offer. This is a very easy variety to recognize and all he needs to do is post better pics. But I assume at this point that the bad pics may have been strategic considering the radio silence.
  8. Kevin, Lets slow down and regroup. Let’s take one thing at a time. Create new posts for each new coin or set that you have. It gets garbled if we bring in too many things into one as we see now. This post has established a few things: 1. Your 76 proof set seems to be average, and it is highly unlikely that your Ike dollar will hit 70. I say impossible. 2. Full steps and other full anything only apply to circulation coins. Proofs and SMS it doesn’t apply because they are assumed to be well struck with good dies. 3. Proof and mint sets, with the exception of 1936-1942, and the early 1950s, are extremely common. Hundreds of millions were made and they are common as dirt. People buy the later silver ones (pre 1965) for the silver content. Anything after 1965 is truly as common as anything in numismatics. 4. Your proof and mint sets appear to be average, and with the very modern stuff there is almost no differentiation between good and bad. Quality control is so good its splitting hairs. Yours are just like all the other hundreds of millions. 5. Because they are not special grading any of it would be a total waste of money. You would spend much more in grading fees and memberships than the final product would be worth. Additionally you are putting all of your focus on the mundane, when you say you bought better stuff. The cents and Morgans are what you should focus on. Post pics and ask questions on those and it may be worth your time. Now you bring up additional questions like proof error coins now. If you believe you have an error start a new post with good pictures and ask your question. We are happy to help, but help us help you.
  9. Welcome. To start with can we see legible pics? It’s not hard to determine if it’s Cheerios or not, but nothing can be seen in those pics. If it is a legit Cheerios Dollar it is worth getting graded and there is a big market for them and they worth a nice chunk of change. Just remember only 5500 of them were minted, and most of them are not actual Cheerios dollars. But again if you will post clear pics of the tail feathers you will know very quickly.
  10. Do you collect old red books? If so we should talk. I have a bunch of them. For some reason I get given a bunch of them, or they just leave them with a collection when I buy it.
  11. Atleast the 76 set isn’t hazy. A ton of them are. But I think aside from that you will waste money doing anything other than enjoying them in original packaging. I can not overstate how common those mint and proof sets are, and most people can’t get someone to buy them. Planning to invest any more in them won’t do anything but throw good money after bad. Just enjoy them
  12. Hi Laura. I would start with posting coins on here. It’s a good way to get a lot of free opinions from some very knowledgeable people. The requested format is to include one coin per post. Post clear and well focused pictures of each side. Try to crop it so the coin fills the frame, but I can’t stress enough the importance of sharpness/clarity. With decent pictures you can get a great deal of information. Depending on the coinage we may ask for additional info such as diameter or weight, but we can cross that bridge if needed once we see the coins. Lastly be open to real feedback. The people here do love to see new collectors, and enjoy seeing people find something special. However, be prepared for the truth to be it’s nothing special. So many people have preconceived notions about the rarity/value that they refuse to be given accurate information. This group will tell you what it is, good or bad, factually. Just don’t get offended by facts, which shouldn’t need mentioning, but it does.
  13. Thanks gentleman. Mike world coinage is my next area to dive into. I’m in the reading and learning what in the heck I am doing stage. I refuse to be a coin flipper and not know what I am selling. So I have some learning to do to get into world, but I plan to get there. I am constantly tweaking the site to make it more user friendly. It probably won’t look exactly the same any two times you log in for a while. I will not be taking up web development as a career that much I know 😂. I sincerely appreciate taking the time to look. Always open to feedback and I appreciate a few of you reporting bugs.
  14. Full steps doesn’t apply on both SMS and proofs. It is assumed because of the way they are manufactured. Same with full bands, full bell lines, etc. It only applies to business strike coins. All of your mint and proof sets are common sets with as expected coins. Show us pictures of the roll of 1909-S VDBs and the roll of 1879 CC Morgans. I would love to see those.
  15. I don’t know that conservation is needed on this coin. As long as the toning is legit I wouldn’t touch it.
  16. The toned coin market is insanely hot. If there is rainbow to any degree it’s 3x the coin value and up depending on color. I sold an $80 merc dime for $500 last week and it was far from rainbow. It had nice rim coloring. I wasn’t going to sell it and a guy offered me $500 for it when I said I was just putting it in my collection. I couldn’t refuse that and I would have never thought to price the coin at that. If the taste of the market decides to change and view toning more negatively a lot of collectors will be very upside down in a lot of the common date Morgans.
  17. I agree that it is, and honesty should be, both to some degree. However my biggest ask is consistency. If all coins are graded with the same criteria I can adjust to the criteria. It’s when it’s inconsistent that the problems occur.
  18. If you need a microscope and camera AMSCOPE is a popular and reputable choice. Spend the extra money to get a stereo microscope. Microscopes and the cameras are one area you for sure get what you pay for. Now if you just need something to view coins and snap some pics without concern for quality go with one of the $40 USB microscopes you can plug into a computer. With that said generally speaking a microscope is not needed in this hobby. I have one and used it a lot in the beginning. Now that I have learned much more I am glad it came with a dust cover because I haven't touched it in atleast 6 months. And I am looking at coins daily.
  19. IF you were to find a new variety, you would need to first get it listed with one of the variety organizations. CONECA is the main one. You would have to send the coin to an attributor, and they will make a decision. Also bear in mind if they do feel it is a new variety, that does not mean it will be recognized everywhere. Many varieties that are recognized by CONECA, Wexler, etc. are not also recognized by the TPGs.
  20. I would have liked to be in the grading room at PCGS when the grader read the form then pulled these bad boys out. I bet he called over others to share a laugh
  21. I agree. Another dead give away, atleast in my head, is the lines involve the letters. If it was an annealing issue the lines wouldn't go through the raised devices like that.
  22. I tend to agree with the grading that this falls just short of cameo. Should maybe be considered a star, which NGC does when coins fall just short sometimes. With that said when you take pictures lay the coins flat and take pics straight on. The angles of the coins in your pics are not good for us to see the coins well.
