  1. Thank you all for your comments. We appreciate your feedback.

Here is a brief description of how our scoring algorithm, designed by our senior numismatic team, works:

We place a score value on each coin that is based on the relative rarity of its type, date and grade. This value takes many factors into account such as grade, population, market value, eye appeal and expert opinion. When a set is ranked in the registry, its rank is judged based on the total of the individual scores of all the coins.

As a basic guide to our system, collectors can look to the market as an excellent method of comparing the relative rarity of one coin to another. There is simply no better indicator of how much a coin is desired.

There is, however, no one perfect source that accounts for all the elements needed to be considered when ranking sets in the Registry. Comparative values of coins in the market can appear distorted (especially at the top end). On the other hand, the grades alone are a poor indicator of how much "finer" a coin is because the grade does not reflect the rarity of a coin.

Through extensive market research, we are able to provide a ranking system that recognizes the intelligence of the market, but offers a more true reflection of relative rarity than does market value, because it appropriately adjusts for market distortions.

As time permits, the Registry team periodically evaluates scores for entire sets and/or categories. Any gain/loss for a coin score affects all owners of that coin similarly. The changes are across the board. You may find the latest list of sets/scores that are being evaluated on the chat boards here:

Thank you and please let us know when we may assist next with the NGC Registry.

I have not posted a journal this year. I have been one of the more active posters for over 10 years however I no longer see the point. I also am kinda ticked that 10 years of journaling essentially has been wiped away and is inaccessible. I loved going back and re-reading where my collecting interests were at the time and how I have evolved and matured in my numismatic knowledge.

I have not purchased a slabbed coin this year--- my longest period since the State Quarters were new. They killed my certified world coin interests, they made the journals tough to navigate and pointless and now graded US coin registries are pointless as it is about the holders and not the quality coins. Salzberg and his greedy ilk have destroyed the Renaissance of the Numismatic hobby--- there won't be a next generation of collectors ( except for the Upper Crust)-- who will buy their precious plastic holders then?--probably 1.4 billion Chines/Asians who it seems are the focus of the company now.

    Hello, Jackson64.

We are looking into your journal history. I see eight pages of journal posts that date back to 2014. Are you able to view them or are some missing? You may email me at aemery@ngccoin.com, if you prefer. Thank you.

The couldn't agree more with comments above.  I used to eagerly await logging in my new purchases into the NGC website.  No longer.  In parallel I have watched the posts on the left side of the control board evaporate.  I recognize NGC doesn't want to run the website for free, they want a return on their assessment by forcing people to have All of their coins greeted by NGC prior to being permitted on the registry.  I read the commentary by Mark Saltsburg Provided data supporting grade inflation by PCGS.  Some of the cases stated appeared to be valid and some on further investigation he had an innocent explanation.  Regardless to offer a potential solution rather than just complaining: it seems to me that NGC could continue to  still continue to support the registry that included both NGC and PCGS by conducting 10% from PCGS Coins on the NGC registry.  Effectively, they are already do this.  On modern mint state gold commemorative's my numeric score is perfect (Each coin is MS 70).  I have a picture as well as a comment for each coin,  but because I have 5 PCGS graded coins out of 40 I am relegated to second place.

It may be that NGC has made a corporate decision to abandon the American market and focus Asia as demonstrated by the fact that the opening page of the registry is world coins rather than United States coins.  While on the issue of the control panel it still drives me crazy, when I work on a set and then hit the back arrow to go back to the control panel, rather than returning to the page that I was on, it goes to the first page which in my case starts with Argentina.

NGC's customer service vis-à-vis the registry is becoming a complete failure.

    Hello, John.

Thank you for the feedback. If you are logged in and go to your Control Panel, the list is alphabetical by country for whatever countries you have created sets. Since you have an Argentina set, and that is first alphabetically, that is why that set displays first in your list of sets on your Control Panel page.

If you are on the Collector Society web site and click on the Registry header, it currently takes you to the list all US set categories as the default.

Feel free to reach us at registry@ngccoin.com if you need any assistance. Thank you.

Thanks for pointing out the HK site!  I don't recall looking at it before and it looks like some of the beta testing for the registry has been implemented over there.  Click on one of your sets and you can see what they have done with some of the formatting for the registry display.

Check out your 1000 yen set (excellent set by the way--I'm chasing you on that one...slowly :D and will probably not catch you)

Hong Kong site version of your registry set

The only things I don't like about that new format are that you can't choose which photo is featured (as far as I can tell, and though my #1 in points coin might be awesome, some other photo might be better) AND the formatting is lost on lengthy comments under the set descriptor.  You don't have that issue on that particular set, but I saw it on my best set.  I also wish we could do a custom header photo as a choice for the featured photo.

In any case I had no idea this had gone past the beta test, so it was super cool to see on the HK site.  Thanks again for posting (and nice to see goals and accomplishments).

@Ali E. is there a way to give feedback/make suggestions (ie complain ;) ) about the new set format?  So glad to see the changes implemented.

Star City Homer, and ilLOminatus, thanks for the feedback.

Making a programming adjustment to the set description editing and allowing a custom set "header" photo is something that is in the works with our programmers for our new site. Any future feedback can be sent to registry@ngccoin.com. Thanks very much.

  5. Hello, ilLOmnatus.

Thank you for the feedback. We are already in the process of a new release for the US version of the NGC Registry, so it will be more similar to the HK site.

ANACS coins are accepted for grading here at NGC. The process differs from PCGS because you may not specify a minimum grade when you submit the coin to us. We will crack it out and treat it as raw. NGC Customer Service can assist you with any grading or submission questions at service@ngccoin.com. Thank you.

Yeah--NGC registry has gotten weird, almost as if they are being intentionally self-destructive. In 2 of my sets that I collected until a week ago they added slots for duplicate coins with different names. Makes completing the sets 100% impossible unless I buy 2 of the same issue and get 2 separate labels.

Also they added a "display" coin which is worth no points but prevents the 100% completion feeling that is the purpose of collectors. There are a few US proof sets where they included the SP coins also ( and also gave out of proportion points for them--look at Jefferson 5c proofs as an example).

I am so done with the registry. I am slowly transferring all of my coins to "custom sets" and building the correct slots on the custom set page and will fill them there--I'm not in it for competition anyhow so the custom set works better which allows coins in PCGS slabs also as a bonus ( except for the time to type in and list all of the slots, it is a preferable place to build accurate sets.)

Thank you for the feedback, jackson64.

We did delete duplicate slots a few weeks ago. If you see other duplicates, we are happy to take care of them. You may reach us via email if you prefer at registry@ngccoin.com. Thank you for your assistance, and please let us know when we may assist next.

  7. Thank you for the feedback.

The U.S. Mint developed a new special finish for the 2013 West Point special 2-coin set. This finish, denoted as "Enhanced Uncirculated" by the Mint, is called "Specimen - Enhanced Finish" by NGC. This was the first time the Mint used this finish. "Uncirculated" descriptions by the US Mint are usually designated as "Mint State" by our graders.

  8. Upon further consideration and discussion, we have made some Silver Eagle Registry corrections. The 2013 Enhanced SP Eagle is now eligible with a separate slot in the following sets:

    Silver Eagles, 1986-Date, Mint State

Silver Eagles, 1986-Date, Mint State, Including Varieties

Silver Eagles, 1986-Date, Mint State, Specimen, and Proof

Silver Eagles, 1986-Date, Mint State, Specimen, and Proof, Including Varieties

If you have questions, you may also reach us at registry@ngccoin.com. Thank you.

  9. Thank you for the feedback.

Any set labeled "Mint State and Proof" (with or without varieties,) refers to the strike of the coin. As such, only Mint State or Proof struck coins are eligible. "Specimen" coins are neither Mint State nor Proof. This is why the 2103 SP coin is not eligible for a "Mint State and Proof" Set.  The only Silver Eagle set that is not titled either MS or Proof is this set:

US Sets breadcrumbsArrow.gif American Eagles & Bullion Coins breadcrumbsArrow.gif

    Silver Eagles, 1986-Date, Bullion Issues

Hence, the SPECIMEN coin is eligible there. Varieties are not in question with the 2013 SP; it is the strike, the method of manufacture, that is different. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, you may reach us at registry@ngccoin.com. Thank you.
