Isn't it funny...???

That a coin graded by NGC as Proof 68 is considered too lowly to sell.

I just find it amazing that in todays world of slabbed coins that a modern coin that grades as MS/PF68 would be considered an inferior grade and thus not worth trying to sell on the open market. Even checking Numismedia Values, most of the modern coins in MS/PF69 are at very low prices. It is only when the modern coin achieves the ultimate grade of MS/PF70 that the coins value increases, and then exponentially and there are exceptions to that too. How strange is this??

I love having high grade slabbed coins and I prefer the NGC slab. It would seem that if your ultimate goal is for investment return, your modern coins will need to be slabbed by NGC or PCGS AND have at least a 69 grade, preferably a 70 if one can afford it. If your passion is just simply to collect modern coins without breaking your bank... then I suggest going to your coin store (my dealer is Ace Coins in Salt Lake City) and they will be happy to show you modern coins in high grades, raw, that will fill your books very nicely. What a great way to spend an afternoon. Talking coins with people that know you and what you collect. People that value your business and are on the lookout for coins you'd love to add to your collection.

I think it boils down to: To slab or not to slab... the answer... for investment (slab) or for collecting passion (not slab).

Even with that said... you could submit hundreds of moderns to NGC (or PCGS for that matter) and have very very few come back as MS/PF70 and then you would be really disappointed at the preceived "loss" of value for the 69's.

I collect Ike's, Proof and Mint State (see my #6 ranked set of Proof Ike's) and Statehood Quarters, both Proof and Mint State. I buy most of them on e-Bay. I search eBay alot and I trust the people I buy from without question. Email me and I will be happy to tell you with whom I do business. Buying coins that are already slabbed by NGC/PCGS saves the worry of getting back coins in a bodybag or even getting a coin that "Just Missed" the grade 70, which is even more of a heartbreaker than the bodybag.

There are many nay-sayers out there about ebay... I say do your homework, check references and stay with a proven product (ie NGC and PCGS),what is their return policy and is there a picture posted? Paypal offers a buyer protection plan, as do most credit cards. There are many ways you can protect yourself in/after the purchase. If you have the time to search, there are some truly excellent buys on Ebay.

This coin graded by NGC is MS68-PL and has a NMV of $255
