A dream realized

A long time project comes to fruition.

Today I entered the last coin to my Morgan Dollar collection! A complete set! When I bought my first Morgan in 1980, I hoped that someday I could lay claim to a complete set - and here I am 32 years (!!) later with all the standard business strikes in my collection.

In the early years I bought 3-4 coins a year at my birthday and Christmas, or my then-wife would buy me one as a gift. As a young man with a wife and family, the budget just wasn't there for such extravagant purchases.

But, marriages collapse, children grow up, and careers advance. Over the last 10 or so years, I've been fortunate to have the budget to chase the dream, and this last week I caught it. I'll never have the #1 set, or even one in the top 50 or 75, but I do have 'em all!

So, I entered the last dollar, moved up a couple positions in the rankings - and then what? Seems like there should have been some bells or flashing lights or something. Is that it?

No. Of course not.

We don't collect for the points or the rankings. Sure, that's fun and all, but it's not why we collect. It's the history, the beauty, the thrill of the chase, the search for knowledge. And a certain compulsive focused acquisitiveness that we ourselves don't even fully understand. And it's fun!

So, the collection is complete, but it is not finished. There's more to learn and higher quality upgrades to consider.

And Top-100 VAMS, and Peace dollars, and type sets, and maybe some gold someday...

Enjoy your coins my friends. If you're not having any fun doing this, you're doing it wrong.
