I may have gone a wee bit far... as usual..

Greetings Collectors,

I want to apologize for the close to "Outta Control" rant of late. We are all collectors here. We all take part in a hobby that personally I believe to be the most rewarding, in more ways than can be counted. I could never emphasize that enough. As in any endeavor there are ups and downs, hills and valleys and also good times and bad. Having said that, I think due to pressures away from here, led to my "going off". The events I had described in the last post was a culmination of repeated times when coins had to be fought for in order to enter them into sets. Not once has this been something that lasted more than a few days and thus the problems associated with the 3-coins from the Heritage auction have been sorted out inside of 24 hours. I think now in retrospect, my comments were not only harsh but somewhat premature. These three beauties in question, minus pics now comfortably reside in my Franklin set #1. Still not sure why this occurrence struck me the way it did. But it's over and now is the time for healing wounds and going on to the next acquisition.

davidk had good points and were well taken. I may have not made myself clear on the two points of slight disagreement, those being the points added to the standings for the same coin and when to release a sold coin. For some time I was aware that a coin point total is counted only once no matter how many sets it may reside in. (the 4-silver eagles I was referring to, were all different coins, from four 1996's I picked from a mint roll trying for at least one "70" from the group. All came back MS-69) It came when a fellow member made mention a few years back that the new type/mint/proof sets that I had started were worth an extra pile of new points. I had to check, but as I thought, for instance a 1941 Walker half could be in quite a few sets at the same time and showing points for each but in the total scheme of things, whatever that Half dollar was worth in that Walker short set did not increase when it was added to a 1941 mint set, a half dollar type set, a 20th century type set, etc etc. I think that I counted once and a similar coin could be a part of as many as 6-8 different kinds of sets but the points for that individual coin was only counted "once" when it came to one's overall points total.

Secondly to clarify on when one's duty is to release or delete a coin from one's sets/ownership depends, and very importantly so, as to what are the circumstances of that sale. I sell and buy on almost a daily basis on eBay and only after a coin is bought/won and then paid for and has been received and feedback left should that coin be released. Otherwise there can be all sorts of problems, as you that buy and sell on "The Bay" know too well. My contention that the coin should be released immediately was in reference to a large "auction house venue" such as Teletrade, Heritage and the like. Once a coin/coins/consignment has been received by them and the auction scheduled, then those coins "Will Be" sold and should be counted as "gone forever". Worst case, the winning buyer defaults or has a change of heart (buyers remorse) and the coin is listed "downstream" to the next auction or two. Regardless the coin/coins are forever gone 99% of the time. The difference between the two (eBay & Heritage) is very different and should be treated accordingly. But anyway for all of us here, maybe this dialogue has helped us all in some sort of way. I have had over a dozen emails from from you all, and all felt the same way & had experienced similar difficulties. I answered one CS member with a thank you and a comment that I felt appropriate as in "misery loves company". It makes one feel a little better knowing he or she is not "the only one" having that particular problem.

So to end on a more positive note, thanks to all who emailed me as I only answered several. I also am glad that my coins from Heritage have already shipped. (That's a 1st for me, getting shipping the very next day.) The 3 Franklin's are truly beautiful with the 58-P having some awesome color, obverse and reverse. They are all NGC coins and they are all in the "first generation" old NGC slabs with the "six digit prefix". And they are "all" MS-66 examples with bold "full bell lines" and labeled accordingly. I can't wait for them to arrive to share some photos to all who like that series. I also have a deal in the works for 4 seated silver coins, 1/2 dime through 1/2 dollar for my 1853 mint set I am working on. Also from the same seller a very nice PCGS MS-63 3-cent silver for the same mint set. This will be a 5-shot "combo punch" which will go a long way in filling some much needed "empty holes" in that mint set, and all at the same time. I just hope we can come to terms on the price on the 5-coin lot.

I've said this before, but I think I am going to devote some time in up-grading some photos here, as many I took in my first few weeks of coin photography, really are lacking in many ways. Also the descriptions on many coins need to be broadened as well. I hope everyone finds themselves in a good position at this half-way point of the week and that all who are on the hunt for that next hole to be filled, are getting close to completing that task. I am going to try to start having more fun with my coins than I seemed to have been having of late. Hope all of you can do the same.

The Franklin half is my favorite series in silver and I leave you with a pretty nice example of the scarcest date of the 20th century "Type Three Double Eagles". All Coronet Liberty gold is by far my favorite in the "yellow metal".

Happy Collecting!
