1904 Barber Dime

The flip side...actually the obverse.

To my surprise there was actually a little interest in my barber dime. I have been asked to privide a scan of the obverse, so here it is. Without magnification, this dime looks pristine, but as you can see under magnification, Lady Liberty has been marred for life. This is a proof dime that is still a real beauty (unless under a mag.) and with a mintage of only 670, yes, well under a thousand, there are very few to go around. When I bought this dime, I knew it had been cleaned but the price was right and with the super-low mintage, I just could not pass up the opportunity.

While NGC and PCGS will deem this a "problem" coin and assign a no-grade to it. Even problem coins will have a place in the collection of a "TRUE" collector. Just wanted to say that coins do not have to be registry quality to be worthy of a place in your collection and even your heart. How many of us have received a coin from dad or even grandpa for our 5th birthday, and have had that coin ever since. You remember, that 1943 S over the dome nickel...made from real silver, as grandpa explained, they had to use copper and nickel for the war, and he knew, he was there. This would eventually lead to some of his war stories too. These are moments hidden away, that will come t light at the strangest moment, like, perhaps seeing this barber dime. You still have the nickel and as you rip apart your desk trying to find it, alas, it is there tucked away for safe keeping, still in its cardboard 2x2. Looking at it, you realize it is not a proof coin, or even uncirculated... as a matter of fact it has been around the block more than a few times, and the stories this nickel could tell make you wonder in awe. But this nickel is forever a part of you. Your link to family past and days gone by, and what is even cooler... tomorrow, you'll give this nickel to your 7 yr old daughter and bestow the stories you received from your grandpa, along with your own. Tell me now that this nickel is not a treasure beyond measure or worth. This little 5 cent piece, once only worth a nickel is now priceless.
