Working & coin collecting during lockdown

Like lots of people I am working from home at the moment, although this greatly restricts normal operations I thought that this would be a great opportunity to catch up on the vast amount of paperwork that needs doing and maybe even get ahead. An advantage of no longer needing to commute means I would also gain 2 & 1/2 hours each day which would be an unexpected chance to further research the coin series I collect.

My experience so far has been that the 'work' tasks that now need to be done at home, are more extensive, difficult and time consuming than expected, particularly if the necessary IT infrastructure was not already in place. Working at home all day has also highlighted the absolute importance of dedicated and organised office space - and that the current takeover of the dining room doesn't count !

I had mentioned that one of my goals this year was to sort out my collection and although I have made some progress on this, it has been slow. The experience of working full-time from home has made it very clear that the detailed research needed is going to be a major undertaking, even more so than the 'day job' as it also involves actual stuff - not just the coins but I have 100's of auction catalogues, periodicals, reference books, purchase records etc which are currently scattered across various rooms. An upside of the delayed running of many European auctions has meant that I have bought only a single coin* during this period and that isn't even in the country yet meaning the job at least hasn't become more difficult. I did find two back copies of 'Numismatique et Change' that I have been after for a while - one in France and one in Belgium - although the other reference material I am looking for has proven much more difficult to get hold of.

Following a review of the various options my solution, once lockdown is lifted,# is to build a 'garden office' or 'glorified shed' as my wife refers to it. Although it means the loss of half of the small garden the whole family is very supportive of the idea as it means they will get the house back xD.

* much to my surprise I have been seriously outbid on a few other lots that were of interest.
# In the UK this probably means planning/regulatory approval is needed and the council offices are closed>:( .

I have not been able to resist bidding still while this has been going on, and it appears that nobody else has either.  I have att least three coins locked down in Europe till further notice, awaiting clearance under the stupid memorandum of understanding. I have not noticed a softness in the World and Ancient gold I am looking at. However, I did feel like the prices at the Japanese Auction World auction this past weekend offered some deals I could not take advantage of. It depended on the coin though.  I think somebody got a great deal on the Ptolemy II gold tetradrachm that sold for under $4,000.

I too am in desperate need of a dedicated office. I used to have one, a whole bedroom with a closet and everything. But that my kid got that. Now I have more of a Nook, which is insufficient.

If you build it they will come.  Meaning the local police of course

You don't get to dedicate large amounts of time to breaking stuff out and doing careful, focused, organized work when you have a 4 year old and a 1 year old. I'm lucky in that I do have a dedicated office space - the only reason I actually get to do my job these days.

Hi i hope your well during all this. NGC says there up and running. I know they have to be working with a limited staff. Now i just received an email from conservation! about one of my tokens. They said that its eligible for cleaning! What i won this at  a very respectable auction. I chcked this when i receivednit with my loop. No marksn scratches nothing wrong with it. This i was afraidnp of peoole.who grade eagles all day now grading tokens. That are 230 years old. They dont know what there looking at.Dollars to donuts it was thebred on the token. I have many Red Brown.  Now its corrision. I will melt it when it gets home. No guareente it will get a grade. Never had a problem all my tokens grade from 63 to 66 now this. After years carossion. There wrong inwill put it up if i ever get them back. And inwill wait till the token group is intact. Stay healthy wealthey and wise. Wait till this

It sounds like Ali interpreted this as a request to make a competitive set for condor tokens and/or civil war tokens. Hopefully that was what you were actually asking about. This idea has actually been brought up many times before.

The biggest problem I think you or NGC would have in making a set of this would be deciding which varieties / types / slots to put into such a set and deciding what tokens would be eligible for each slot. I don't think that would be nearly as simple and straightforward as many people seem to think and it would probably result in an unreasonably large set. I think that's why they keep responding to the idea with "make a custom / signature set." And it's worth noting, as I did one of the last times that this came up, that several people have done just that and some of those sets have won major signature set awards. So... it's not like really great and cool sets of condor tokens and civil war tokens aren't getting made in the registry. They are! You just maybe have to be willing to look for them.

In case you're curious, here are links to three nice civil war token sets I've seen before and linked others to:.

https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=15784

https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetView.aspx?s=1354

Hopefully you can enjoy looking at those! Civil War tokens are an interest of mine too.

One of these days I'd love to get into them more but I need to finish some other things first. I very briefly had my own custom set for some graded civil war tokens I have but it was tiny, unimpressive, and I deleted it because I had no spare time and energy for it and looking at it made me sad. lol

Mike, thanks for watching! Sounds like you've put together quite the set, congrats! This coin is in my Symphony Set, which is also under the custom sets here on NGC, the direct link is here: https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/wcm/CoinCustomSetGallery.aspx?s=9450

I know what you mean - we had a 2-bed place which meant I had an office, No1 child arrived - lost office. Moved to a 3-bed place which meant I had an office, No2 child arrived - lost office. We both refused to move to a 4-bed place xD.

I also got a coin at Auction World - no invoice yet though and I too thought there were some deals going through until the lots I was interested in appeared. That seems to be happening alot lately, I have decided it is because I have good taste or as my Dad would say 'champagne taste and beer pockets'. I did pick out 3 coins at Heritage Central States that I thought were possible and was outbid on them all - spectacularly in one case!

Teenagers are no better xD Work have said they will upgrade my IT in September - can't get deliveries of the required items until then :frown:.

@MIKE BYRNE Heritage weekly sales seem to have lots of British tokens at the moment. Davissons are also a good source and, to me, it appears that the quality is much higher in the US than we see here in the UK.
