THE JOY OF COMPLETION

"What is it about looking at a complete, matched set of coins that brings such pleasure?" I'm sitting here; glass of wine in hand; looking at an attractive group of coins lined up on the desk; and feeling pretty good about today's numismatic accomplishment. For today, the last coin needed to complete a set, arrived in the mail- an 1875-CC, 20 Cent, NGC-63. My 4 coin uncirculated set is now complete! I've been searching for this coin, in this condition for a couple of years, now. It's anot

First coin show

Held at Washington Middle School, Honolulu HI How exciting it is to start a new hobby!   Being totally ignorant of everything involved, other then the limitted internet research I have done, I found myself in awe of all the different beautiful coins presented. The first purchase I made was the "Red Book" and as I scanned through it, it was overwhelming. I finally admitted to myself that what started as a few nice coins being given to my little boy as presents have sparked an interest that

Saint-Gaudens' designs for American Coinage

Oh what could have been! A week ago, Eric von Klinger had an article in Coin World on the Saint-Gaudens pattern coins, telling a lot about the design process for the double eagle. Well, Teddy Roosevelt fully intended Saint-Gaudens to redesign every circulating coin in the country, to rid the populace of the "atrocious hideousness" of the then current designs. The other day I was thinking, what if Saint-Gaudens hadn't died before he finished the reworking of American coinage under Roosevelt?

Binion Collection

My first pedigree coin. My first pedgree coins are from the Binion Collection. It's just like a Hollywood movie, greed, sex, and murder. I enjoy this collection, but wish there were more dates and mints to collect, I don't think you can get a complete collection. I've only found Morgan, and Peace dollars for the registry, with a couple of Walking Liberty's.

MISSING GOLD EAGLES

Finding the missing eagles is a challenging task to say the least! Can anyone help!!!!!!!!!! I thought my set was starting to come together until I added it to the registry. Boy was I wrong! I am still filling the empty slots but it sure seems slow some times. I have quite a few extra 69 & 70's that I would be willing to trade for the ones I need if anyone is interested.

Myself as a new user of the NGC Registry

NGC Registry is great! The NGC Registry is a great way to keep track of your coins and compete with others! I was wondering if anyone was selling very cheap Lincoln Wheats that are graded from NGC or PCGS that I could add to my set. Have fun collecting and competing. I sure am!

Magnifiers

Can anyone give me suggestions for good quality loupes for viewing my coins? Currently, I'm looking towards a Zeiss 3x+6x=9x loupe, but it's very expensive. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

YOU NEVER KNOW.....

WHAT MIGHT POP UP!!! A recent purchase was an 1861 Half Dime, MS-62 NGC. It's initial appeal was primarily nice luster and very pretty, light gold toning. Once I had the coin in hand, it had a rather unusual look; so out comes the loupe, and here's what I found: -Very strong die clashing on both sides of the coin. -The obverse strike was especially sharp on central devices (head, torso, and foot details). I'm now thinking, "this little beauty is really undergraded!" -Obverse perip

Martha Washington Test Piece

Golden Dollar, Made for testing in the UK using Martha dies Martha Washington Golden dollar test piece. Given to me by a friend who knew someone who worked for a uk company that made coin operated machines some years ago. I understand that the test pieces were made to test the durability of different alloys when used in coin operated machines. This must be similar to the one that turned up in someones change in the US I guess.

15 MOST WANTED LIST

UNEXPECTED CAPTURE!! For several years, I have created at the beginning of each year, a list of the 15 coins that I would most like to add to my collection. Actually finding and purchasing these little "gems" has been an effort with mixed success from year to year.   One coin, the 1898-S Barber Quarter, has been an especially elusive target. It has been on my list for 3 years, without me ever seeing one advertised, let alone actually seeing a coin. This Spring, I was the underbidder for

COIN PURCHASE WITH A SURPRISE

COULD THIS BE A NEW DESCOVERY? The mail man delivered my latest purchase today - a 1943-D 50 Cent, NGC MS-66. With my usual excitement, I tore open the package; scanned both sides of this new "gem"; and then focused in with my 5X glass for a closer look. Immediately, upon scrutinizing the reverse, I noticed "something" about the mint mark. It just looked different. So I went to the 15X microscope, and sure enough- there is a clear repunching of the MM to the North. I grabbed my copy of

1970 proof close and wide AM cent?

I had just bought 2 1970 proof sets, and was going through the cherrypickers guide to see if there were any errors. For some reason, I looked at the back of the cents, and there is a definite difference in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The "United" seems unevenly spaces, and the AM in America has but a paper width seperation, where as the other has a definite seperation. I've checked some 1971 proof cents, and they all have the seperation. Has anyone heard or know of this as an error coin?

Dirty Buffalo Nickel

Is Acetone Really Safe?? I have a Buffalo Nickel that is in excellent condition, without any flattened surfaces and a really nice strike however, it is really dirty. It isn't corrosion, it's just dirt. I am so scared to touch the nickel with anything since I am so new to all this and I was pretty much handed over (inherited) this 2000 coin collection that wasn't well cared for and I've heard everything from mineral oil, to olive oil, to acetone can be used to clean coins but, I'm scared of th

Registered Mail vs Fedex

I am about to move and even though I sent my coins in to be graded via registered priority mail, it still took four days. So, I asked my mail person how long registered mail generally takes and they said it could take up to twenty days. Does anyone have advice on this. I've already paid for Express grading service for my first six coins (inherited a huge non-graded collection) however, I really didn't think much about the mails turnaround times and marked registered mail for the return rout

THERE IS NO REGISTERED PRIORITY MAIL.

Priority mail, delivery conformation is much faster. I prefer Priority mail with delivery conformation. It can be insured and you can check delivery info on line. From Michigan to NGC is two days. If you have insurance on your collection look to see if it covers mailing and save the postal insurance cost.
