Hawain Dollar 1883

Not a teaser. Real Mint Kingdom of Hawaii. Akahi Dala. King Kalakaua. Legal Tender Coat of arms. Likely best, from what I have seen. 11-25-2005

All Sets Now Ranked in Top 100 Updated 3/03/06

Still have a few coins to be graded and then added! Just added 18 more coins from the Long Beach Auction. Some very hard to find in any grade coins. Looking Good!I have bought and sold coins for years, but just got hooked on collecting graded coins over the last three years. My wife doesn't like it but I'm not doing it for her. Ha Ha I finally got all my sets ranked by NGC under 100 with the addition of a 1892-S Morgan AU 50 NGC which has been my goal. Just added two more coins 1878-CC M

The pursuit for a complete set of NGC PF70 Silver State Quarters... 3 down, 47 to go. :-) Ok, you it is going to be a long journey...and perhaps pricey. In my recent search I have found an abundance of '04 and '05 with some '01 through '03 mixed in. What I have not found, however, is too many '99 and '00. I know they are out there and I believe it is best to get th

Puzzled by NumisMedia Total in NGC Registry Set.

Check Your Values!! I wonder why the total value shown in my Morgan Dollar Set (NGC Registry) is incorrect? If you add all the values for each coin that total is much higher than the amount shown as the "NumisMedia Totals" figure. The actual total is 14% higher than the total shown.

1949-S Wheat 1C Error?

Do I have a error coin here? I recently purchased a fist full of wheaties from a local coin retailer. In re: PCGS v NGC

BUY 'em up qwik ! There really is no reason for the huge price difference between PCGS and NGC coins. Personally I think NGC is better (else I should be in the "other" registry, which I am not). NGC doesn't seem to base thier grading on the number of coins that a person or company submits, nor do they try to curry favor by giving higher grades to favorite customers. Just goes to show that people who pay these unreasonable price differences just have more dollars than sense (or cents). Now s

PCGS versus NGC

How is it fair that PCGS coins sell for more than NGC coins? Recently, I have looked at auctions with teletrade and noticed that PCGS coins seem to carry a significant margin in price over NGC graded coins. I was already aware of this, but just not to this extent. The 2005 MS70 Marine Corps commemorative graded by NGC sold for $150 in one auction, while the same coin graded MS70 by PCGS sold for $1,100! I feel that this is just absolutely ludicrous. I cannot believe that collectors will pay so

A few new features worth noting

We've added several new features to the registry and the Collectors' Journals that are pretty fun. On the set detail page, we've now added a gallery view: http://www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/PeopleSetDetail.aspx?PeopleSetID=5673&Tab=list We have also put in some code to block people from spamming views on their sets. Back when we put this feature in, we did put in a simple block to prevent logged in owners views of their own sets from counting in the views, but we di

Beautiful 1917 Coin

1917 Type 1 SLQ MS65+/67? I thank everyone for their particular reasons as to not get this particular coin cleaned (professionally) by the NCS. Nobody, ever told me of ever trying this medium for themselves. However, after many chats with NCS and NGC. There is the possibility that it can go up a grade point. This coin has already been graded MS66FH. Go look at the numbers. Would you Dare??? Made My decision. This coin is worth....

Whatever YOU are willing to pay for it. There has been some discussion as to wether we are pricing young collectors out of the hobby, and to a lesser degree, the value of some of these coins. There is a price range availibility for any level of collector and that is the beauty of this hobby. Now matter how much we can spend or how meager our budget, there will be something we can add to our collection. Something we can hold, look at and admire. Something that will continue to inspire our col

As collectors, have we gotten too stuffy.

Are we pricing new young collectors out of the hobby? I recently exchanged e-mails with a young collector who is just getting started. His collectors' society name is chaosxemperor. He took the time to share his excitement about getting a nice MS-63 1904-O morgan (see "The Newest Addition" journal entry). In expressing his excitement he stated that the coin was expensive ($52.00). Apparently he has recieved e-mails stating that the coin was neither rare or expensive. Shame on you. This youngst

Phase 1 - The Bucks - A Long Journey to Completion

A substantial accomplishment* that, over time, will only slide in to obscurity having never reached the top ten. *In my humble opinion anyway. Well, I finally got as close to the top ten as I ever will with my registry set for "Modern Commemorative Silver Dollars 1983-Date". My labor of love (read obsession) is 100% complete as of today; simultaneously debuting as a full member of society and reaching the zenith of its existence. I knew from conception, by its very design, that

Kennedy 1964 Proof Accented Hair PR-70?

About to make first entry, came to a complete halt! I was about to make my first entry and when I came to the population report I could not believe what I seen there. I thought I had something very special with a PR-68 DC 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar with Accented Hair. When I looked at the population report, it showed 6,089 in Proof 70! WOW! Can that be true and accurate? If it is, I'm just blown away with my coin, what is up with this? Thanks, Tom

The Newest Addition

One day on the DLRC(David Lawrence Rare Coins) I found a beautiful coin. A 1904-O Morgan Dollar. Just one problem. It cost 52 dollars! So after much debating, I took out my hard earned cash and bought it. On a side note, it was a 1*****(A beautiful coin). The days passed by and I literally was running around in circles waiting for it. Then it came! It was beautiful! I guess I have DLRC to thank and myself for being crazy enough to take out a wad of cash to buy it! EDIT: After being messag

It's all about the journey.

I blame the Boy Scouts. Some of my facination with this hobby stated around age 9.Then coin collecting merit badge entrenched it in me. With myself it is Indians and buffalos.I keep looking for that better grade.Well through the years enthusiasm is up and down ,but my desire to keep searching has never left me,loking for indians and buffalos in mountains of old coins.Besides I can think of nothing better to collect than money.

Morgan Dollars: Why do we love them?

A nice type coin? Sure, they're pretty and desirable, but can you love them, and can you find them? Yes, I know, Morgan collectors are nuts. We break out in a sweat at the sight of a frosty MS-67. We mortgage our house for that 66 DMPL cameo. But just ask us to fork over the cash for an MS-65 Type 1 Standing Liberty Quarter, and all of a sudden we're short on cash because we have to fix the car. Or we have promised the wife "no, honey, I'm done buying anything else for a while." Never admittin

PCGS vs NGC Grading

Are PCGS coins graded more conservably than NGC coins? Then why are PCGS coins worth so much more when reselling? I recently submitted 7 lincoln cents graded pr70 ucam by NGC to PCGS for cross-over. Want to guess how many did?

Ninety percent down the trail and two of 14 still remain elusive! I've been wandering up and down the Oregon Trail in search of the 1938-D and 1938-S. Has anyone passed these two along the comemmorative trail and remember where they were sighted so the location can be passed on to a fellow pioneer? Thanks
