About this journal

Time to switch gears.  Focusing on buying some investment property and need some capital. I haven't really added much

to my coin collection in awhile either.  I decided all my SAC, Presidential dollars and Silver Eagles must go.  If anyone is

interested, please look at my sets and let me know what tweaks your interest.  I am not done being part of this society just

clearing house... :)

Early Releases

Just what does Early Releases label offer?? Let me first state that I am not against the "Early Releases" label but I do not understand why we need it at all. I could see it when it was just the Silver Eagles and how some collectors want just that label or collect every label that exists. So... as a collector...do we collect the coin or the grading company or the label? Does anyone really care if they get an Early Release nickel or Presidential dollar when there is no extra points given t

Changes are needed now for Registry Set Awards!

Registry Awards have lost their luster! Again, This may come across as mean and a poor sport but changes are needed for the registry awards. Cancer has spread across many registry sets and doesn't seem to have any cure and is not slowing down. LLC's have taken over many modern sets buying up all high grade coins overpaying many times what the coins would be worth in the future all for a small piece of paper saying...I'm am number 1 again... but it also is saying "I have unlimited resources

New Presidential Slots!

Separate sets now for Mint Strike, FDI, SMS and more. NGC now has split up the Presidential dollar sets to allow more members to obtain a Number 1 set. Thanks NGC!!! May God Bless everyone To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

1981 D Jefferson Nickel Business Strike MS66 NGC 5FS

Only 4 exists in the NGC census!! Once is a great while you find a coine worth grading while looking for something else. I usually buy 1981 mint sets on Ebay now and again looking for that MS67 SBA. I have been lucky before so I am still hopeful it will happen again. This 1981 D Jefferson Nickel Business Strike MS66 NGC 5FS coin has lots of luster and a great strike, hard to find from the 70's and 80's. I usually don't collect business strike nickles but I could not just toss it away eith

United States Mint Uncirculated Coins Get a New Look in 2011

Could this be the end of FDI Presidential dollars?   Satin finish to be discontinued; brilliant finish reinstatedFrom the US Mint web site:WASHINGTON - The United States Mint today announced that it is discontinuing the satin finish on numismatic uncirculated coins produced for the United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set? and other products. Instead, beginning in 2011, uncirculated-quality coins will feature a brilliant finish. The United States Mint began using the satin finish for its un

Registry Awards are nearing.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race! I have had many blessings finding the Business Strikes for the Presidential Dollars set. It took me awhile to be patient and not grab the first ones offered on Ebay and over pay for them. You may not find yourself on the top of your registry set when the awards are given out in a few days but in the end, if you are patient enough, the price will fall once everyone else grabs theirs early on but you have saved some money and have no remorse. 2010 P Sacagawea Missing Eye

Mutiple errors Lately the US Mint has created some very interesting errors with their Sacagawea Business Strike Dollars. This one has a missing eye, parts of the mouth and face are missing. A Hugh Die Break too. I don't collect error coins but I know other collectos love them. Amazing when you are looking at how the strike is on the coin and then your eye catches that she is missing hers! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 2010 P Sacagawea Great Law of Peace NGC MS67

There is an error on the reverse but what kind is it? I had a couple fo these with errors graded and both came back as MS67 from NGC. I did not indicate they were error coins though. Now I know the grade, I need some advice from all you experts. Is this a gradeable error by NGC and what type is it? To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. 2010 Buchanan Business Strike President

Could this be the key date/President for the series??? With the NGC census updated today, I am quite surprised with the low population that was graded for this president. Has some dealers stopped grading the presidents already? Has the collector walked away from the series this soon? I believe it is just a lull before Lincoln dollar is released then watch everyone's brother hop on board if they never collect another president. I will make my prediction now and say that the Buchanan dolla

2010 Buchanan First Day Issue Submission

WOW....one MS68!! After 2 boxes of Buchanan "D" dollars, I was only able to submit eight "D"s. I felt I had one MS67. Out of 12 rolls of "P" dollars, I submitted eight of these as well. I felt I had a good chance of three MS67. I was right on both counts. one Buchanan D MS67 FDI three Buchanan P MS67 FDI but...wait for it....I found my first "P" MS68 FDI.....YES! I want to thank Josh for his help with the "P" rolls. Good luck to everyone that collects the Presidents. To see ol

2010 P Sacagawea Great Law of Peace Dollar Reverse Error

What would you call this error? I just received two $250 boxes of SAC 2010 dollars. I have only gone through a few rolls and already found 6 of these error coins on the reverse. May not be worth much but sure is fun when you find something new! To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here. New comments can be added below.

1987 P Jefferson Nickel MS67 NGC MS 67 6FS - TOP POP!!

You just never know when it will happen! Here is another example of fishing for one and finding another instead. I bid on two Mint sets on Ebay a few weeks back and really was just interested in the 1981 Mint Set for the SBA's. The other set was a 1987. I went okay.....some more change for the bank later... I was disappointed with the 1981 set and I glanced at the 1987 and you just know when you find a six full step nickel and having it be a MS67 is a miracle. The observe does have a Proo

2010 Franklin Pierce Dollars FDI

I have been blessed with the best FDI submission...ever! Most FDI submissions I end up rather disappointed with the results or didn't even bother sending any dollars in for FDI because of the condition that the Presidents have been in lately. I just got my results back for the Pierce dollars...and my eyes got wide and my jaw dropped. 4 - P MS67 FDI 3 - D MS67 FDI 6 - P MS66 FDI 7 - D MS66 FDI 1 - D MS65 FDI I do need to thank a dealer that assist me at times getting some rolls.

In search of high grade SBA's

Would you believe a MS67 from a US Mint set? One would think that all the 79'-81' Mint Sets have been searched over and sold and searched over again. It was just by chance I picked a Ebay seller with low Feedback numbers as one that doesn't sell that much or is fairly new at Ebay. I only paid $8.00 plus shipping. As soon as I looked thru my 16x piece, I suspected the 1981D was a MS67. I even thought the 1981S was a MS66. I was half right, the 1981D is a MS67. Just got the results back fr

Response to Poorly graded coins

Quality Control starts with every Submitter!!! I, too, agree that there are far too many modern coins with First Day Issue that should not have been graded that well. Most dealers that send in bulk to NGC & PCGS never see the coins until they come back graded and even then never look at them let alone inspect the grade given. I have, on more than one occassion, returned a coin to a dealer because it does not meet the grading standards. I need to be proud of the coins I possess and knowi

Commemorative Update

Six out of Six! I wrote before that I sent in 2 of the Disabled Veteran Proofs and 4 of the Uncirculated for grading. Lisa was so nice to let me know the status. ALL 70's!! I never had 100% before....either I got lucky or my eyes are not as bad as I believed! Yeeeehaw!

2010 D Fillmore Edge Error

Another Partial Missing Edge Lettering Dollar I have been fortunate to find three partial missing edge lettering dollar errors since the Presidential dollar series began. I never did find any total blank edge like the Washingtons though. I don't collect error coins per se but I am rather curious about the collectors that do. Is it really that valuable to have a modern day error coin like the missing edge? Not that I am not complaining though since they do tend to bring in a few bucks to u

What brings joy and satisfaction to a coin collector?

Thrill of the hunt Many things that an average coin collector receives that a corporation and deep pockets can't. That thrill going thru rolls of coins you just got from your local bank. That anticipation of finding that unique error or that near perfect strike. I recently purchased a original bank wrapped 1954 S quarter roll. That excitement knowing you were the first one ever to lay eyes on those coins in over 55 years. The awe and wonder of those coins of the luster and shine. Findin

It was fun while it lasted.

Corporate Money has no place in these personal registries It was fun being No 1 in the Presidential Business Strike set while it lasted. I take pride that I am just a small collector with small resources to be Number 1 for even a year. I only will have NGC slabbed coins in the presidential registry because this is a NGC website. Until PCGS allows NGC coins in their sets, they should be ban from this site as well. I bet over half the awards went to collectors that have over half their collec

2010 NGC Silver Eagles MS70

I found a place still taking orders online for $99 After watching the activity on Ebay on the 2010 Silver Eagles and others reporting the poor quality and the USMint limiting production... its hard to get a good feeling just what the real situation could be. I broke down and ordered one from the very company that advertises on our webpage here. http://www.moderncoinmart.com Their site said they sold out right away but are expecting more for delivery later this week. 1968 S PF 69* CAMEO Nickel

I got this one for a song! Sometimes you just get lucky on Ebay. There was very little action on this 1968 S PF 69* CAMEO Nickel. The seller never even mentioned it was a Star Designated but it clearly was in the picture. So I crossed my fingers and bid on it hoping it was a Star. When it was all over with..I purchased it for a mere $20. I am real surprised though that it doesn't have more registry points. Only 5 exists in that grade with a Star. 2009 Registry Awards

Once again...Changes need to happen here!! Here we are a month before the close of all the registries to be honored as the best in all categories. Most take it serious and take pride in their sets and being honored as having the best set. However, when PCGS coins are allowed in a NGC Collectors Society and are NOT allowed to have NGC coins on the PCGS site, things need to CHANGE! NGC has never inspected any PCGS coin that reside in any registry set yet they are accepted as equals without

A Long and Winding Road Indeed

Finally found that MS67!! Ever get a hunch that there has to be a MS67 but trying to find it is another thing all together. I have been searching box after box of the Harrison "D" dollars. There was only four FDI MS67 and they were all found by one person but there was never a business strike "D" MS67. After $10,000 (or more) I finally got a box that most looked better than all the other boxes and it was just pure luck I ever even got that box. I asked my local bank to order another box of

1000 hit milestone Still number 1....for now. I know its more important where you rank at beginning of the year. For now...I am thankful I least held that position for awhile. With that being said, I know I will have the best NGC graded presidents in the registry. Some still have made no effort to fill the slots with any NGC. I have said before....any slot filled with PCGS graded coins especially when there are NGC coins available. I have a different set with just FDI PCGS but after 200
