"Testing, One, Two...

"Doing a little trial & error"... Greetings, I do think my business will be the thing that suffers the most with this new addiction. All in all I beleive the money lost by my "not working" will be a "wash" due to the massive amount of time spent with my camera & computer will, on the flip side, keep me away from the auctions, that continue to "bleed" me dry. With all the shots I will need to make and then, the post shoot editing, I could be tied up for months. This could be a very go

The "reverse" of my 1905 "Double Eagle"

Just wish I had cropped these before posting... Hello again,   Just having loads of fun with a few gold coins!   Happy Collecting!!! WKF PS I have studied the Liberty Double Eagle series in more depth than any other coin and when I tell you I have seen reverses on MS 64 coins that do not look as good as this one, it's the "gospel" truth. The "Anacs" grader who looked at this coin was definatly "out to lunch" when this $20 came across his or her desk. I am so glad he/she was and I

"Many Thanks to Many of You!"

"What an ordeal this has been"... Have made progress but still have a ways to go... "Mission somewhat acomplished" Greetings Collectors, As most of you know, I have been involved in the most tedious process of getting some pix to post with my journals. The one I have here (if I picked the right one) is a 1905 $20 Double Eagle that I puchased in late summer. I will not know 'til I actually post this journal whether or not it is a good photo. Anyway as I mentioned in a previous post, this was

"I broke my promise"... Oh well, only kinda sorta...

I knew it would be difficult, if not impossible... Greetings Collectors, Several days ago I made a promise in a post that I would refrain from further purchases (coins) 'til I was ready to post a pic along with the announcment of a coin purchase. I have been trying very hard to get my photo skills to the point, I could post a pic with each and every jounal I posted. My plea for help has been received by over a dozen fellow collectors. I thank each and every one of you for the quick and helpf

"I Want to Buy... your help"

Posts of late have "lit" a fire under my butt! Greetings Collectors, I am going to try and make this short. I want to buy lessons, over the phone, if possible to get to the point where I can get photos of my coins here on this site. What pics I have all need to be trashed and started over. These were done my daughter a good while back and while I saw they were not acceptable then, I did not have the heart to complain and ask her to help me do them over as she did not want to do them in the f

"Very Very Low Mintage Modern Gold & Silver"...

"A few coins worth a second look" (Maybe a first look for some) Greetings Collectors, I should really stop and think before I write about certain things. "Hindsight" is so "20 20". I am going to try very hard from this point going forward to not be derogrotory or mean spirited no matter what is said, to me or about me or about any of my friends. One of my fellow collectors put it so well when he said he tries to "never feed the trolls". Having said that about "hindsight", I want to touch on

A Shallow "nitwit" and a US Mint fiasco...

Both are/were an equal "Pain in the " Greetings again collectors (and complainers) Today was the day to order the much touted Lincoln five coin special proof set. I, in pure "journal fashion", am sharing a collector experiance. I am blessed to have some really nice and very fast computer equipment. But having it and knowing how to use it is a different story indeed. I thought I would sit down at the monitor at 11:30 and attempt to log on to the US mint web site, one that I have logged onto m

Proof Coinage from 1950-1970...Part Two...

Techniques pertaining to all proofs of this time-frame but more so detailing the "Franklin Half Dollar" Greetings Collectors, I write this completly exausted from the ordeal encountered getting confirmed on my purchase of the "Lincoln five coin proof set" that was offered today beginning at twelve noon. The details of this will take up an entire post later this week. All I can say is, "what an ordeal". Proof coinage has come a long way to what we have today. The proofs of the 50's through

"One" per household limit... Greetings Collectors, The much anticipated proof Lincoln Silver Dollar (the last 50,000 of the 500,000 limit) along with the four proof Lincoln cents will go on sale at noon eastern on Oct. 15th 2009. The previous sales of the dollar coins sold out in six weeks. Of the 450,000 sold to date, total proof sales 325,000 and just 125,000 in Unc. This will take the total to 375,000 proofs and only 1/3 that amount in the uncirculated version. If any of you do not have

Proof Coinage from 1950-1970...Part one...

"Wow, what a long way the US Mint has come"... with silver proof half dollars, among other issues. Greetings Collectors, I have bought proof sets along with mint sets for many years. I just thought it was the thing to do, as in having "one of each" at least. Some of them are barely worth the issue price, others a bit more. Having said that, I can count the different denominations I have slabbed on way less than two hands. I have no "slabbed" proof halves going back earlier than 1954. The one

Buy gold and silver now... 6 months later...

Shoulda, woulda, coulda... Greetings Collectors (and investors)   I realize this is a numismatic site and not a stock/investor site but all of us here, for the most part are investors along with being coin collectors. If we knew that what we bought would go down in value more times than it went up, I dare to say there would be fewer of us here. Having said that my thoughts today are, again, for the most part, exactly the same as they were on my post of March 19th of this year. Today, like

"What a Summer & then some"...

I've been very busy but still very much "addicted" to my coins! Greetings Collectors, Early August was my last post so there is much to share with you all. I have tried to keep up with all of your journals and I am very happy to see the "passion" still remains with all of you. My last two months have had issues not related to Numismatics that have consumed much of my time. Foremost a very dear friend of our family lost his battle with COPD at age 87. He was like a second father to me and iss

"Expose the Crooks & the Cheats"

People new to our hobby and others need to know! Greetings Collectors, It has been over a month since I have posted anything and while I am sure there are some who wished I had waited longer to open my mouth, for whatever it's worth, I'm back. As of late I have been doing my best to not take part in this economic downturn. In fact I have been trying to support as many industries as possible. While my work continues to be steady I have picked up an additional hobby to help suck every avail

I have decided to take a trip down "memory lane"...

Getting back to my "Numismatic roots" for/with a little change... Greetings Collectors, I have been "caught up", "addicted", "obsessed" and "chained" in a "tunnel vision" sort of way, for quite some time, buying slabbed coins in order to further my sets and my rankings here at the "registry". The "monkey" on my sholder has worn a callous from his constant "tapping" to buy this or bid on that. I am sure that most of you can relate to the excitment of taking part in an auction or picking that

A Very Pleasant Experience from "Teletrade"

In this hobby a deal like this is well worth mentioning! Greetings, Just wanted to share a little something that happened to me. I get a large majority of my coins through auctions, mainly Teletrade, Heritage and e-Bay, in that order. I don't think I have ever heard of something like this happening before and know it has never happened to me. I sent off several large submissions to NGC several months ago and even made a comment in a previous post about some of my coins being returned in "b

"Weary of making vows that I can't/will not keep...

Decided to just buy whatever I can afford whenever... Greetings collectors, First off, it's good to see Mr. Thompson back in the "numismatic" swing of things, and with a very nice 20 year old Jefferson. Congrats! Also congrats to Jackson on the 5000 views to a set he has worked so hard on to get it where it is today. If any of you have not checked out his signature set, to say you are missing something is an understatement. And last but not least a "hearty" congrats to Audrop in the Morgan D

Just "ONE" sorry dealer can "almost" ruin ones day!

But in the end, it turned out well, the law of "Reciprosity" Greetings Collectors, Yesterday, today and tommorow is Jacksonville Florida's anual coin show. It was a nice sunny day and while it started yesterday, I was tied up with work and made it down to the show today around noon. I do not remember ever seeing such a crowd at past shows here. We were suposed to have around 70 tables but there was close to a hundred. People from all age groups and I witnessed patrons doing nearly zero selli

"Lofty Goals set for the next year"

I may be dreaming to think this list will be completed... Greetings Collectors, It has rained steady for the last week here in N.E. Florida and with all my current jobs being outdoors, I have had time to do a good deal of reflecting as to where I want to go with my sets. I think this was needed for me to get a grasp on not only my sets but my finances as well. In the last 72 hours I have gotten a few things in the mail and have won several other "lots" that have yet to arrive. This week I

Banks here in N.E. Fl. have no "cents" or P.R. quarters?

And they don't plan to order any... Greetings, Forgot to mention in my earlier post that I have been to over a dozen banks, some I have accts. with and others as well. No one has the Lincoln cents or the P.R. quads. I have purchased, at face value, all the state quarters from my banks here up'til now. I would get four rolls of quarters and the pres. $ and send two to a friend in Vail Co. and he would send me the D's for my P's. It has worked well up until now. Fearing I would be left out on

Coin Purchase Withdrawals...

"Don't enjoy leaving town unless it has to do with Numismatics" Greetings Collectors, A very dear friend who I grew up with, and actually started collecting coins with, called me last week to invite me up to Charleston S.C. to do a day of offshore sport fishing. As I got ready for my Thursday through Saturday mini vacation the excitement was coming and going due to the fact that I would be away from my computer and my coins for several days. I tried to minimize the discomfort by bringing my

PCGS "Old Green Holder" Info...

There are some real "gems" still out there... Greetings Collectors, I have been very busy of late with my business and of course my favorite hobby and have been meaning to post a "tidbit" of information on the very first series of holders from PCGS AKA "Old Green Holders". When I started collecting in the mid 1960's there were no such thing as grading companies. Everyone was pretty much at the mercy of whoever he or she was dealing with. I took a long break from coins at the completion of

Is there Life beyond Coins?

Sometimes I wonder... Greetings Collectors, I was just here at the computer where I usually am late in the evening and was thinking how my life is somewhat "consumed" with numismatics. I do work during the day for the most part but being in business for myself I work my own hours. But tonight having just hung up with my girlfriend I really started thinking about how much time this hobby takes up. For example, I had a coin day Sat. and then there was the new issue of "Numismatic News" that

"Lazy Saturday turned Coin Day"

The "Lure" of Gold & Silver never leaves me... Greeting Collectors, Started my day off at a customers job site to pick up a draw early this morning and to meet with a couple of rep's from the "homeowners association" who disliked the color the owners had chosen. Long story short, I will get paid a second time to paint the exterior of this 10,000 sq.ft.+ home located on the banks of the beautiful St. Johns river here in Jacksonville. While I did lobby on behalf of my client, to no avail

"Toning, Colorfull or Drab, Is this not Damage?"

Why is some surface damage good? Greetings Collectors, Having just received submissions back from NGC and having a "negative" body count at #6, I have been doing some research and studying on the effects, positive and negative, to a coins surface. I have not cleaned or altered a coins surface in more years than I can remember. When I was brand new to numismatics I can remember taking a pencil eraser and polishing a beat up Indian head or Lincoln cent or various other silver coins and thinkin

Submission Disapointment but...

I have no right to complain... Greetings Collectors, All my submissions are now back at home as of today and boy what a mixed bag. As I have mentioned before, I sent three separate invoices off at the same time and an additional one a week later. The latter arrived Sat. and the "triple" arrived yesterday via "pink slip" which I picked up at the Post Office this afternoon. While some of the grades were great, some were not and I had six "body bags". Before I share the results I want to say
