A"Lottery" win on eBay

Things like this are very "uncommon" in my life... Greetings Collectors, Understanding there is more to "numismatics" than FBL Franklin halves, I have decided to share with you all something that happened to me in the last couple months. I have shared this story with a few of you so for you guys, forgive me for being redundant. Since my construction business is only doing about $.25 on the dollar from what I have been accustomed to, I decided to start a business on eBay. I buy and sell jew

Three little "Rarities" I really "Own"

It takes "all kinds" to make a world! Greetings Collectors, I have been reading the journals of late in regards to those who list coins in the registry they do not own. It has to be that those guilty parties are the same ones who would copy off others "test papers" in grade school. It's also just like the guy who has a huge spoiler installed on the rear of his three year old 4 cylinder "Focus". Or like the person next to you at the light with his stereo pumping out enough "base" to spill you

A "Rarity" Comparison that may surprize you...

There really is "no comparison"... Greetings Collectors, I went to the bank yesterday and brought home all of my Franklin halves so I could spend the weekend taking a close look at all of them. I then for the first time actually looked at the census to see just how scarce some of the dates throughout the series were in "gem" MS-65 with the "full bell line" designation. I knew that several of the dates were very scarce but the actual numbers really surprized me. This being my favorite silver

"One Very Nice Chunk of Silver"

Unless "extraordinary" this will be my last photo of any Silver Bars... Greetings Collectors, I had a few minutes as several $2.50 Liberty Gold coins I am currently watching on eBay are a little while from ending so I just wanted to share a photo of the "centerpiece" of my silver bar collection. I made mention of this bar in a post of a few days ago but with it pictured with all the others, it could not be seen very good. This very heavy bar is 4-inches long and 1 1/2 wide X 1 1/2 inches thi

If only this Franklin had "Full Bell Lines"...

It would join the only other "one coin" in existance... Greetings Collectors, Just wanted to share a recent purchase. I picked up a nice group of Full Bell Line Franklins on eBay recently along with two MS 66's that were not full bell line coins. This is one of them. This 1953-S in "Full Bell Lines" is the "Holy Grail" of all Franklins. There are only a handfull in MS 65 FBL and only one in MS-66 FBL by both of the "top two" graders. NGC is known by those that follow this series closly, a

1ST "GOLD KILL"

It's good to be back... Greetings Collectors, Thank you for your notes of condolances about my dad. God is definately still in the "miracle business". Because thats exactly what its been in his case. Just wanted to leave you with a photo of what I think is a very well perserved $2.50 Liberty. Picked this little MS-61 jewel up on Teletrade this last week. I feel sad in a purchase like this for anyone who has got to the point that they need to sell some or all of their coins just to keep

COMPLETED SILVER BAR COLLECTION

I'm ready to move back to coins in a big way! Greetings Collectors, It's been a while since I posted a journal here and while there are some of you who probably wished I was gone for good, I'm back. I want to thank those of you who have stayed in contact & you are aware of the issues that have been keeping me very busy. For those of you that don't know... For the most part it has been the health of my dad. Actually he's my step dad but he and I have been alot closer than my real fathe

FEELING THE NEED FOR AN "INTERVENTION"...

or not... When I am walking around with this stuff, I "steer clear" of all bodies of water! Greetings Collectors and/or Hoarders, I am finding it difficult to "have a life" now that ebay has me by the short hairs. Between selling & buying & shipping & listing and an occasional halfway decents night sleep, I am finding it hard to find the hours I need in an average day. I did stop long enough to check my 16-coin submission status and damn, it's been shipped. I found it most pa

"MORE GORGEOUS SILVER!"

And also have been buying some 2008-w unc. Gold... Greetings Collectors, Since Jan. 1st my "self imposed" moratorium on "newps" (new purchases) has expired and I have been wasting little time in making up for "lost time". most of my buys have been in the form the "metal" takes before it is refined into blanks. I have however been buying several pieces of "modern gold" because of two things. Number one the 2008 "fractionals" have extremely "low mintage" figures & I am continuing to see pr

"MAYBE A SOLUTION TO THE U.S. MINT'S "SILVER SHORTAGE"...

Then again, this would not help at all... nor would I even think of doing it...Greetings Collectors,Just rolled back into town after being in the "boonies" away from the internet & cell phones visiting my dad and logged on to get a brief "snippit" of the 2009 journal awards. First off, congrats to all the winners as they all truely deserve it. While some have complained about the journals in general, having lost "something", (still haven't quite figured out what they were refering to)I coul

"The Lure of Pure 999-Fine Silver... & gold...

Merry Christmas from me to me... Greetings Collectors, This is journal entry number 90 for this calender year. And it will be my last for this year. As in my coin collection, which is "all over the place", so has been my topics for the year. I know I have made several of you pissed on more than one occasion. But to those in that camp, please try to realize that anything I say is just one persons opinion and like a-holes everybody has one. There are only a very few that can lay claim to not o

"SELLING OUT"........A Sad Day Indeed.....

Turning over a "new leaf" for the new year... Greetings Collectors, It is again that time of year when some of us decide to start something OR stop something. This time of change runs the gamet of all kinds of things. My large change is to give up the nasty habit of cigars. I quit smoking cigg's about ten years ago but have grown to enjoy a good cigar while sitting on my rear deck, usually with a good numismatic book or newspaper. Coming from a family of lawyers and having a daughter in her

"Santa Knows Best!"

Actually I should say, "The Kids know best!!!" Greetings Collectors, Here's wishing all of you had a very Merry Christmas! We are getting close to the end of yet another year. I will save the gory details of all my many failures and mistakes for a later post. One of the few things that I did get right was buying as much Silver & Gold as I could possibly afford. Just wished I had bought more. Again that ugly "greed monster" trying to rear its ugly head. Also an additional positive is th

"The Last Piece Arrived Today"

Now off to NGC they go... Greetings Collectors, The last coin I have been waiting on came today. The "Braille" Proof Dollar will now join the other fifteen coins to be sent out on Monday. I actually already had a Braille proof but knew this one would be here any day and I did not want to make the trip to the bank and then try and find it in one of the four boxes. One would think it a pleasant job to go digging through a bunch of coins, but to find one such as this was not something I wanted

"Latest Treasures That Arrived Today"

Now I am only "lacking" one coin... Greetings Collectors, I have somewhat blown my "vow" of refraining from spending any more money on coins for the remainder of the year. Well, I guess the vow may still be good as I bought the two Gold Eagles before I made this promise to myself. Oh, and then the minor glitch when I purchased a pawltry two roll set of the latest Lincoln Cent, along with another couple of "Braille" items. This was a small expenditure of about $100. That really shouldn't coun

Why does one need more than one or two SETS of the "SAME COIN SERIES"???

Or maybe three, unless it's just for the "POINTS"... Greetings Collectors, I haven't made anyone mad lately, least wise I haven't heard about it, so I guess I'm due. I have looked at and continue to look at sets others have here at the CS. Before I go on, I just want to say that I love seeing the "diversity" and all the photos as well. But what is really annoying, is when someone has a dozen or more of the same set. I mean really, how many Sac dollar sets are enough? One collector here has #

2009 Braille Education Set

One of just a few... Greetings Collectors, First of all I just want to say I find it sad that for one collector, some of you "Reach Out" and for another... some of you "Lash Out"... It almost makes us "blind", don't you think?. Just wonder what Mr. Louis Braille (1809-1852) would have thought of us?... very, very sad indeed, shame on us... This is the "reverse" of the center section, of the "three fold" Education set, one of less than 10,000 sold. I would have shared the "middle page obve

I SHOULD NOT EVEN BE HERE...

NGC JUST GRACIOUSLY LETS ME COMPETE, EVEN WITH THE ABUNDANCE OF MY COINS sitting in PCGS Slabs... Greetings Collectors, I had been going through a few of my sets of late thinking perhaps I had a slim chance of an award, not a "top tier set" but in some other category. I called NGC and spoke with Amy who I have spoken with on many occasions, about numerous topics, and inquired as to the requirements needed for consideration. I knew that there were those that last year, they "did not" have the

"Did You Know The Denver Mint Was"?...Conclusion...

actually robbed on the "inside"? Greetings Collectors, In this, what will be my final journal entry for the Collectors Society fiscal year which ends in less than 24 hours, I also conclude this little history lesson on a mint that was a long time "in the making". As I laid in bed last night, I thought about these events surrounding the Denver Mint. The vast majority of those events, I had no clue of. My mind raced through a "multitude" of things concerning not only the mint and all of the "D

established in 1862 but used only as an "Assay" Office for the 1st 43 years... Greetings Collectors, As I begin my 81st journal entry of 2009, I quickly scanned over the topics and subjects of past journals, and could recall only one somewhat controversial subject. I thought that pretty good for me. Anyway I just wanted to say that I am so very thankful for all of you here at the CS and I read every one of your journals, many times more than once. I have learned much about coins and photogra

"Established many decades before the first coins were struck there"? This, part one deals with the establishment of "Denver the little community of humble beginnings"... Greetings Collectors, First of all I want to thank each and every one of you that have sent me e-mails within the last 24 hours. I never expected the responce that I received. I was not going to continue this type of posting without getting the "go ahead" from those of you who read these journals. I will say, I spend a great

"Daring Daylight Robbery at the Denver Mint"

Happened about a week before Christmas 75 years ago 1922... Greetings Collectors, Since my post of yesterday, my curiousity has gotten the better of me and I had to find out all I could concerning this robbery at the Denver Mint. First of all I want to say, that if what I am writing about, is not the thing to do here at the CS, then drop me a line. If I get ten votes to the positive, I will continue along these same "somewhat" numismatic lines. If however I receive five votes to the negative

Some "Must Read" Interesting Facts Concerning Coinage From The Early 1920's

Also some facts about the Mint Director at the time... Greetings Collectors, There has been much "to do" about our current U.S.Mint Director, Mr. "Ed" Moy. He has not made many friends of late in his decision (and it "IS" his decision) to not strike any 2009 Proof American Gold and Silver Eagles. While I do own most of the Silver issues and a few of the proof $5 & $10 1/10th oz. in Gold and platinum, I am more upset that the "fractionals" in gold & Platinum have, for the most part ce

"Last" Opportunity to get a very Low Mintage Set...

I realize $ is tight, but I think this set is a real "Sleeper"... Greetings Collectors, I have seen the Lincoln Coin & Chronicle Set selling in numerous locations for $179.95. I have not checked E-Bay and it may be indeed cheaper there or it could be more. I even called one of the "major" retailers that advertize in both of the "weekly" coin papers. Every month there are three that I can think of that have "multi-page ads in the first dozen or so pages of these publications. When I calle

A "Very" Lucky Find At My Bank...

Didn't Hit The Lottery but Close... Greetings Collectors, The "find" I speak of did not happen recently but actually two years ago today. The Washington Gold Dollars came out earlier in the year and the exact day I stopped at the bank is one I do not remember. It was not too long after these dollar coins had been released when reports started coming in that some of the coins had missed a part of the new minting process concerning the "edged lettering". More and more reports were coming in an
