Wood's Hibernia

These historic coins ... were rejected in Ireland at striking and are quite hard to find today. NGC has only graded 9 other examples of this particular coin, the 1723/2 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny overdate. This one will be sent in soon to see what its fate may be. I'm thinking F/VF with a true overdate. This would certainly justify the cost of this coin raw. I don't see any major marks or corrosion or signs of cleaning that would hold this coin back. Natural wear only. I hope the NGC gr

So-Called Dollars

Is there a place... in the registry, other than as a Signature Set, for So-Called Dollars? The particular one I purchased is currently unlisted in the Pop Report but it is supposed to make the list this year. I haven't found a place for it yet so I created a Signature Set for it. Hopefully more will follow this one shortly ...

No loop here. Just the camera lens one inch away. Oh! The camera was also set to its highest resolution and then cropped and compressed using a cheap photo suite program (like most of my other photos on the registry). This process even works for me on copper... vumc409

RE: Photographing Coins

Each has his own way... I use natural light when taking all of my pictures of coins. I use the macro setting on my digital camera with the lens about one inch from the coin/slab. If I want a closer image, I pull out a 30x jewelers loop and put it between the coin/slab and the lens. My opinion only, but it works for me about 95% of the time.

RE: NGC-PCGS Face-off

You may want to consider... why your choices are what they are in the search for an answer to your own question. Really! Why do you buy NGC and grade PCGS? Sounds to me that you like the cheaper price of NGC but favor PCGS graded coins for some reason. You'll have to search your own feelings for that answer. I personally find NGC and PCGS coins equally attractive on a grade-for-grade basis. I do like the cheaper prices of NGC and prefer the NGC slab over that of PCGS. I value each coin

RE: Family Time!!

What a joy! My almost eleven year old son also enjoys the hobby. When he was born I bought his birth year proof set and we have been working on completing his Dansco Lincoln Cent album for the last two years. I also collect mostly Lincoln's. However, my son has shown a keen interest in US silver coin, especially Kennedy and Franklin halves. When we go to coin shows he heads straight for them, coin album/list in hand. He is even to the point where he spends some of his on money on his coll

2005 & 2006 Satin Finish Lincolns

Miffed... Imagine. You login to your account and quickly peruse your sets in the Control Panel. To your amazement, you discover you have lost several hundred points and a slot or two (maybe more) in your rank. You open your set only to find coins have been removed from your set, separated into different designations and scores have been changed! I'm sure it's happened before but this is a first for me. I've only been around for about two years and so far have collected mainly in the Linco

Designations

Have I gone completely crazy or just not remebering correctly? With most coins, the Proof coins are designated either Cameo or Ultra Cameo. But with the copper coins, the Lincolns specifically in this case, the coins have the added terms of Brown (BN), Red-Brown (RB) or Red (RD) attributed to them. I opened my Proof sets of Lincoln's just a few minutes ago to find that only the Techinical MS Grade was shown. Have I lost it or what? Just a week ago, the entire grade was shown in the list,

Most of my ... silver and a few Lincolns I have upgraded from are currently listed on eBay. My 2005 Mint Set will join the lot shortly. A few more Lincoln's will be posted in the days ahead after their upgrades arrive in the mail. Everything I have except for my Lincoln's, my Aussie Lunars, my SMS Sets and my 1966 set have to go. 1959D Jeff 5c...Anyone seen this before?

I think I have found some doubling... but I need some help. I am not very knowledgeably about any series but the Lincoln's! I was putting together some Whitman folders today and noticed this. It appears to me this is some sort of date doubling. The "59" in the date are the suspect characters here. As it appears to me, there is definitely a small 5 stamped below the prominent 5 (all of the loop, half of the stem and the tip of the cross bar are visible on this small 5). I think I can also

RE: Conservation

Just last week we found an 1806 ... Draped Bust One Cent piece in AG condition in some of my wife's grandmother's belongings (the Colleen from my 1896 mint set and my Morgan set). It does not have a great monetary value but the sentimental value is priceless. I think the coin can be NGC graded as it has no corrosion or other significant damage, but should it be conserved and given a details grade instead? Take a look and see what you think? 1806 Drape

Into Lincoln Proofs?

Here is a new arrival from my set. This coin just came in yesterday. It is a typical example of an early 1970's proof. Well struck but with a little toning and haze. Still a very nice example for a site unseen coin. It is in PR68RDU which leaves only one grade higher for this particular coin. Very affordable in this grade but gets pricy in 69. NGC1989298

Another Lincoln!

Is it overgraded/undergraded/correctly graded? Here is a 2003D Lincoln NGC MS68 I purchased not to long ago. What is your opinion on the grade? Overgraded? Undergraded? Correct grade? See my MS set for the Reverse picture and coin description.   I could not find one single thing wrong with this coin. I think it should at least be an MS69 if not an MS70! NGC1865136

A recent purchase.

Yeah, I'm a Lincoln nut! Here is a coin that suprised me when it arrived. I thought I was purchasing a simple 1993D Lincoln in MS68RD, especially when the coin description did not mention anything strange about the coin. Well, when it arrived I went straight for the 10x glass just as I always do with a new arrival. I usually spend a good 10 to 15 minutes looking at the coin for haze, toning, defects, etc. before I enter the details into the Registry. But, I looked at this coin off and on

RE: Okay, I just can't help my self.

I don't believe I missed the history lesson or the journey you speak of! If the members of the chat boards will remember, I have made the same comments you made, but only on the chat boards in several posts. The journey you speak of is of utmost importance in coin collecting. Without it, these tiny pieces of metal we so eagerly track down would be just that, tiny pieces of metal with absolutely no signifance in our lives. However, each coin has a history, a purpose, a character and a perso

RE: Registry Awards

I respect your opinion. However ... I'm not sure I agree with your statements, especially about working hard. I firmly believe that each person holding a #1 registry set should have a time limit in that slot. I am adamant that each one of us should be moved to a Champion's Hall of Fame, etc. after that time limit and we should be duly recognized for our accomplishment. I'm not there yet, but believe you me, if I ever am, I'll vacate quickly for the next guy to move in! I do agree with y

RE: Star Designation

Is star better than PL? Here is my interpretation. In your particular case with the MS63*, NO the star designation is not better than the same coin in MS64PL, IF you are looking at the Registry score and the sggested PCGS Value of the coin. The registry score for an MS63* is 143. For an MS64PL, it is 234. The PCGS price guide gives the value for an MS63 @ $64 and an MS64 @ $120. Given these values, the value of the MS63* is probably around $100. The price of the MS64PL is listed at $1

Registry Awards

Should there be a time limit? I would think most all of us want to be number 1 in at least one registry set. I am no closer than seventh so I have a ways to go. But what about those 2nd and 3rd sets? Should they have to sit idly by year after year waiting for that number 1 set to go by the wayside? I for one think there should be a time limit on holding the number 1 spot. Maybe that set should be limited to say 3 years in the number 1 slot and then be retired to somthing like a champions

RE: Best use ...

Is it open discussion within the guidelines or no? I happen to agree with Michael Cooper. If this is a forum for stuffy, white collar collectors, then I need to go elsewhere. I used to be one of those guys before I retired due to disability from a 16 year engineering management career. Let me say there was very little humor/fun in that arena. Although I tend to be a very a opionated person and often get too one-sided, if we can't discuss numismatic issues on this forum, why does it exist?

Hello, my name is Michael and I am also a Numism-addict!

I started out about 20 years ago on the cheap stuff, a penny bag here and a penny bag there... I would scrounge up every bit of money I could find and hit the flea markets to find that next fantasy raw coin. I stayed an occassional "user" for about 18 years. Then the addiction hit full force - I found eBay. Just like the rest of us, I went straight for the hard stuff, for me anyway. You see, I collect small cents, mainly Lincoln Proofs, but am now beginning to spread my wings into other a
