My Coin World letter Printed

If you get Coin World/Trends, and read the guest commentary, my rebuttal letter to the editor was printed int he Aug. 7th issue... I haven't written here in my journal for a while and there really is a lot of personal collecting news to tell...too much for one journal entry so I'll break into several this next week.First, I recently was a bit outraged by a guest commentator{a history professor by trade}in the editorials.Often these pages are full of whinings about... the mints ordering system.

10 coins submitted for crossover 3 body bagged

ngc grades tough but isnt that why we use them? when they grade a coin we know it might be better.....but it cant be worse! i recently submitted 10 gallery grading company coins. for those of you who havent bought a ggc coin....good for you. they grade and call it a ms67. i was thrilled they only bagged 3. my experience with ngc is....tough but fair. exactly why i started to use them.

NGC and PCGS

Why is it that when looking at someone like Heritage Auctions and comparing the same coin that sold in an NGC holder vs a PCGS holder, the PCGS coin demands more money at sale. I have Studied several modern coins that are listed on the Heritage Auction site and five identical coins with the same identical grade the PCGS coins are getting sold for quite a bit more money. I personally only use NGC and like them very much. An occasional mistake but they are prompt to correct it. I just do not

To descriminate between what is good and what is bad

Can you look at a coin, and even if you don't like it, understand it's technical qualities and aesthetic appeal (even though not aesthetically appealing to you)? Can you distinguish a coin like that from true ? It's like Boticelli's painting of the birth of Venus. A gorgeous painting, genius, and tons of believers. Can you dislike that painting and still see its beauty? Can you compare it's beauty to the original Greek statues of Venus? And can you understand why some people might prefe

What makes a top set?

Is it pictures and descriptions or is it the grades of the coins in the set? Does my perfect set of Sac proofs..all Pr70UC..deserve to be listed as inferior to other sets containing the same grade coins just because I'm a lousy Photographer...or is the quality of the set to be determined by the editorial skill of the owner? Just a thought.

RE: Re: NGC vs. PCGS

NGC enhances value by its inclusiveness. PCGS has a fanatic following from people who still believe that it applies stricter grading criteria than any other TPG. Population reports suggest that it may be true only of MS70 or PR70 grades in modern coins. Also, there is some speculation that PCGS may be keeping the 70s tight only to serve its dealers' network. Regardless of the reason, the effect is that there is a market premium for PCGS coins, even in lower grades. I do not beleive that th

Delusions of grandeur

Are you wearing rose colored glasses Several recent Journal entries have inspired the following thoughts. If you believe there is a definitive grade on any coin submitted to any grading service, then you are wearing rose colored glasses. In reality, numismatics is not a science! Therefore each and every grader will have their own personal bias. Herego, the larger auction houses routinely submit a coin over and over again, to get the grade they want. It has been well documented that many of the

ended auction! will hold it a while!

sorry about not posting this sooner. ended the auction on the 2006 buffalo 50.00 gold coin. the coin is in perfect condition. graded pr-70 dcam by ngc. been told by a couple of very nice people that the coin will go up in value over the next year or so. so i ended the auction i had going on e-bay. bought another one and planning to send it in to be graded. hoping for another pr-70? this is going to be a great year for all of the collectors. good luck and sweet dreams. steve

re: turnaround times

PCGS Regular vs NGC Early Bird PCGS Regular is actually more expensive at $150 because there's a 5-coin minimum. NGC Early Bird has no minimum number of coins submitted. After experiencing some difficulties with PCGS, I don't think I'm going to be renewing my account with them. NGC customer service is better anyway...

"When you come to a fork in the road ..."

My apologies to Yogi Berra but I came to that fork last Sunday and I took it. Over the last couple of months I had begun to explore what it might take to improve the small group of dollars I had in my registry type set (since dismantled). These were the remnants of a US proof type set I had assembled years ago and then auctioned off during the 90?s. Retired for nearly 9 years, I concede that I?ve lost some of my competitive spirit. Nevertheless, I was intrigued by how much a few carefully chos

Re gold buff

Sell now, the mint is still making them and won't run out. There are just too many for this coin to ever reach a value status, above melt. Keep one for yourself, if you like it. But for an increasing mint product buy...... You should buy the proof platinum coins, if you want long term value. They have very low mintages, and an increasing collector base.

Still Waiting Here Too

Long Wait seems to be Getting Longer I'm in the same boat with several of you. NGC has 4 orders and none seem to be moving forward. I have 2 older orders that are still in received status, one since June. One in Grading process and 1 in Quality control and it's been there for a week (for only 5 coins). It's very frustrating. I'm thinking of trying some of the other guys, just to compare. This seems way too long.

"Patience Lieutenant, patience." Sarris, Galaxy Quest. My most recent order was received by NGC on July 18th as well. With the 19 day work day turn around, that puts the order to be shipped around August 11th (thanks Michael W. Cooper). I think it's still to early to be concerned about the order. (They have been "scheduled for grading" for almost a week now.) Sometimes an order can rapidly progress through the different stages. My last order of 5 coins spent nearly 13 work days in the "

Do you want it fast or do you want it right??

This coming from the king of complainers.... Let me tell you... I have ripped NGC more than once, both on and off this site... I have been their king of complainers. Having said that I would rather NGC take a little extra time and get it right rather than be fast and have slip-shod service. It is helpful to check CURRENT turnaround times before sending your coins. You also need to remember that those turnaround times do not include weekends (sat/sun). Today on the NGC site CURRENT turnaroun

Turnaround times

So here's a question.... Is the current turnaround time what to expect if you send a coin in today? Or for all coins they have now? With the turnaround time for economy going up and up, are my coins ever going to be returned? I still have an order from 06/21 marked received... I was expecting early august based on their 30 day turnaround time...but within the last day or two they tacked on another 8 days. 38 days is excessive to say the least.

TURNAROUND TIMES

AND HERES YOUR ANSWER! You need to quit your crying and thank GOD you live in AMERICA and have the FINEST coin grading company grading your coins. I would suggest your go on E-BAY and look for more coins to send in while you are waiting. Works for me

RE: Do you want it fast or do you want it right??

If only you could guarantee this tradeoff... If only you could guarantee this tradeoff... I might buy it. However, the reality is that it could take a million days and still be inaccurate. These coins arent taking forever because NGC is taking extra time to look them over. They are taking extra time because they are sitting there waiting to be graded behind higher priority items... and once they do get to these coins (which are piling up) they will be so behind, I would doubt any additiona
