There are THREE price guides...

and the first two dont count... When the times comes to think about selling your treasures, you are going to be in for one heck-of-a-surprise!! We have all heard about the PCGS price guide and we know how far out of whack it is. Prices are as high as the clouds. Then we have the NGC values derived from Numismedia. Those prices are supposed to be more in line with real world buying and selling. But when you go to sell your coin to one of these companies "PAYING HIGHEST PRICES" well... they us

Well silver as long as you don't tell the boss about me

I am glad to have "crunked" your interest in civil war tokens. One of the best things about coins in general is that there is so much to be learned and as a community we can specialize and keep the flame of knowledge alive and well. One of my favorite civil war tokens is the Dix token. There are some really cool variations of the token and it just "jumps" out at me with the partriotism and spirit of the times. Once again i am really happy to see your interest and excitement. It's great to

Not one of YOUR virtues?

Now I am the patient one....on the 19th ask for identity...on the 20th went out and bought 4 more and 2 ref books Patience is definitily one of my virtues...I went a whole 24 hours before I jumped into a new collection...Patriotic Civil Was tokens. After finding a CWT in a bunch of stuff I bought, and having the kind mr. Gator identify it for me, I have now joined the CWTS and bought two refferences and another 4 tokens to start my CWT Army/Navy themed type (?) set. Oh well, just don't tell

Patience is NOT one of My Virtues

Mailed Coins for Consignment in May..first check will be mailed next week...sigh I am not a patient person by nature, in fact coin collecting for the most part has been good for this character flaw. It has taught me the patience/selectiveness in waiting for those hard to fill slots, coins in the value/cost range, grade ranges..and of course- budget range. In May I decided that I would consign some of my collection to liquidate money for upgrades/additions to a particular set I want to finish. Re: RE: TIME TO MOVE ON

I could never sell everything... I do plan on keeping some coins. I have a Dansco 7070 which I begun a short time ago... and it and the coins I have collected thus far for it, will remain tucked away. I also bought another Dansco album and filled it with blank pages (one for each denomination) and it is almost completey filled. That will remain as well. There are also some select graded coins I will not part with. The reality is that there is a lot of money tied up in my collection....mo

RE: TIME TO MOVE ON

When I was younger I thought very much the same thing. I was starting out a family and I had no time for coins. My fiance', who was wise beyond her years, told me not to sell it. She told me that I would regret getting rid of it in later years. When I was younger I thought very much the same thing. I was starting out a family and I had no time for coins. Time to move on.... for now

Im selling off most of my collection... The time has come for me to move on. I have enjoyed coin collecting, and I am sure I wondt wonder too far, but I am going to sell off most of what I have and move the rest to the back of the safe where I can forget them and coin collecting for a while. Coin collection can really be addicting and I find myself constantly with the urge to buy more and more. My primary collection is my NGC PF70 Silver State Quarters so I will try to refrain from lettin

The 1861-O $20

One of the favorite coin in my collection is the 1861-O $20 The 1861-O double eagle is a fascinating coin and one of the favorites in my collection. Of the four southern gold coins dated 1861, it is the only one from New Orleans and the only double eagle. Like the others (the 61-D $5, the 61-D $1, and the 61-C $5), the coins were or possibly were struck under the auspices of the Confederacy. Of the mintage of 17,741, 5000 were struck by the Union, 9750 by the State of Louisiana, and 2991 by th

Let the counting begin....

The race just began... I just mailed my package to NGC at 4:45 pm, lets see what the turnaround for World coins is going to be. The package should get there on Monday or Tuesday so we don't need to worry about the "ANA" effect. Lets see what the turnaround times reflect. I am sending in 14 coins with the 5 free coupon for being a CCG member. The current (as of mailing) turn-time is (10/12 days) for the value service. Coins received at NGC 8/21/2006, curreny trun time still (10/12) days m

Phase 2 - The Proofs - My Second Child - Almost a Week Late

Another substantial accomplishment* that, over time, will also slide in to obscurity having never reached the top ten. *In my humble opinion anyway.Amazingly, it has been exactly 9 months and 5 days since my last journal entry (The Bucks). With thanx to Ed's Elegant Coins (www.edselegantcoins.com), I am a Father again.Today I registered the last two coins in Modern Commemoratives 1982-Date, Proofs Only! Like The Bucks, The Proofs came in just shy of the lofty single digits, ranking 13 with o

ANA World of Money

I haven't been to any Numismatic events since childhood. But that is about to change. Since I live in Denver, I am going to the show this Friday. I don't really quite know what to expect but I'm afraid I'll come home from it with a new idea for collecting. Like I need more??!! The advertisements on TV indicate there will be lots to see. It should be fun.

Sometimes taking a passive approach pays off!

What I find, with myself, is that if I look FOR a coin, sometimes, my standards become compromised. I think this is out of WANT superceding LOGIC. I find, sometimes, casual browsing, brings you to (or brings it to you...I don't know which) an outstanding coin. Something, maybe, that you didn't think you would ever LOOK for. Well there you have it!

My Signature Set "WAR AND CONFLICT"

Reading about the hysteria we are all experiencing on the auction side of coin collecting gave me cause to pause. As a relatively new collector I must plead guilty... to being part of the problem. I rely on PCGS, NGC and the red book for values, however they rarely agree. So for me it has turned into a matter of how much I have to spend vs the desirability of the coin. I began collecting when the mint issued the Marine Corps Anniv. Commemorative. I have fallen in love with this hobby. My sig

Why I selected my signature set of all US Cents 1793 through date

I found two coins in a desk drawer that led me to this selection. I am new to coin collecting but I have had two very good experiences that led me to adopt this signature set as a goal. First of all I recently submitted a penny for grading that came back as a 1909 S VDB MS 64. I took this coin out of a small envelope from where it was purchased and the price was noted as $2.25. The second coin I I found was a 1956 Flying Eagle 1 Cent uncirculated still being evaluated. I have no idea wh

About being "tested" as a collector

Mike makes some good points about the craziness in the auction market lately.... Part of this, I think, is that more and more people are buying coins at auction than previously, and they get caught up in the bidding frenzy without proper regard to how much they're actually paying for the coin. I figure they must be forgetting that the bid isn't the "full price" they're paying; there's also the 15% (or more) "bidder's premium" paid to the auction house on every purchase, plus postage/handling (

Being tested as a collector

This is a time where auction prices, both the reserves being set and the amount of money some coins are going for are totally out of sync with 'reality'. And this is a time that I believe collectors are really being tested. Where do you draw the line? How do you not get caught up in the hysteria? How do you deal with more and more coins not being within your reach? The answer to all of these questions is to become an even better collector. Now is the time to take your collecting skills and r

NGC Turnaround time

With all the comments on turn around time, here is my story Sent 5 coins for economy on 7/21, marked by NGC as received on 7/24, went right to quality control on 8/8 and was finalized and shipped on 8/11. That is 15 working days from being received to shipped. That is great service considering their posted time. 2 of 5 crossed, not great percentage since I thought another for sure would cross. This is the ANACS F12 1897-S that crossed... 1897-S 50c
