Photo illiterate...

No need to be photographically challenged. (is that PC or what...) While I will not claim to have the best images on this site, I'd be willing to wager I may very well be in the top TWO... ok maybe three. If you would like me to email you what I do, please let me know. If enough people respond, I'll make it a general post. Just click on my coin gallery and see what you think. I have been told that this dime is either a 1942/1942 or a 42/41. Sent it to PCGS. They kept my money but refu

Damsel in Distress ~ ~ ~

"....A fool and her money soon go separate ways..." Okay, so I don't know much about grading services; looks more like I know nothing at all. You all have heard of "NuGrade Services," right? Talk about "fly by night" companies! Their web-site has 4 links: three to e-bay and one to a site called "skinny llama." ??!!?? But I digress... I bought 21 statehood proof quarters graded by NuGrade. Most of them were graded "PF-68" with one or two 67 and 69. I paid more than I should have for the c

Why is it taking so long?

Not getting my money's worth. My coin arrived in NGC last Wednesday Aug 23rd. But its still not graded yet even though its supposed to be a walkthrough! I paid $125 for a quick service. Its taking too long.

PITT STOP....

The race continues It has been a week so far with the coins mailed out and received on 21 August 2006. SO far no phone calls from NGC so everything must be ok. Have to like that... Current turn around is 10 days, the coins stay at motel NGC is now 10 days 2 less than originally expected. Well let me go now.... By the way 4 coins submitted at the Baltimore Show to ANACS are still in Motel ANACS... With 3 still being decided on how to handle by the ANACS guru's. In their slab, but wont

Year sets..enjoyable collecting

Older years almost all have a few"scarcer" dates/mints I have a few modern sets that I have finished and add the yearly new addition to it. I have 2 signature sets...1 which is complete and one which is endless{sailing ship themed coins}. I also still like to start an album or folder and fill them with problem-free upper grade coins that still have nice eye appeal.I have been working on a 3 cent nickel collection of unslabbed, AU, circulation issues, for what seems like forever.I love silver h

1882 O/S MS60 NGC and 1897 S PL MS63

Nice VAM Logged on the other day, checked my email and there was some mail from my local dealer. He had a list of new stuff! I could not wait for the next day to arrive. I had to wait until after work to visit the coin shop. I arrived and he brought out about 12 new slabbed coins for me to look at. I first noticed the 1897 S PL. The reflective fields caught my eye right away. It turns out it is a VAM 4! The next coin I went for was the 1882 O/S VAM 5. Nice coin, graded MS60 by NGC - I knew ab

NGC Graders

Too tough on grading Well I guess its time to quit submitting coins to NGC until their graders get there heads out of their rear ends and start properly grading coins. Ironically I sent in 4 1948 P&D franklins with super strong strike and FBL all 4 were blemish free not a single mark. the first 1948P graded out MS63 FBL, The second AU58 amazing since these coins came from mint sets, The first 1948-D rejected for scratches and the 2nd 1948-D MS64 FBL again all four coins blemish free, ful

A Positive Experience With HCGS...sort of

My one experience at buying HCGS coins worked out in the end.. OK, just the facts...I fell for a listing for 4 Barber halves on ebay...the coins I got were not those in the photos and were not the grades advertised {and even lower than the grades assigned on the slabs}...I paid only $40 so I figured I could salvage this small monetary mistake{the blow to my numismatic view of myself would be harder to fix}.So I pulled the little piece of tape off the capsules, that hold them closed{was already

re: HCGS, SGS

HCGS and SGS aren't the same -- not according to a site I found regarding TPGs. I found this site to be quite useful regarding TPGs. http://www.camacs.com/coin_grading_services.html

enjoyed reading third party grader comments

allan the site you referred to is maintained by ebayer Cameo who is a dealer but i don't think he really does much on ebay any more. I know for a fact he is all about ICGS a opinion i disagree with emphatically. By the way Cameo is very knowledgable but i would be very careful not to offend him. Michael i noticed that we have used the same buyer/seller's in the past and that made me feel comfortable about my recent purchases. VBG By the way I thought your advice was very user friendly a

I hear alot of growing painsVBG

Rookie mistakes amaze me! When buying coins the first question i always ask after careful study is do the laws of supply and demand have much control here? Second question i ask is the deal too good to be true? If it is it probably isn't Why would you buy a coin without some type of serious knowledge of what you are recieving? I won't say great deals do not abound because truthfully some people don't know what they have, in the same breath, most usually have researched the value intensely.

HCGS and SGS must be the same company!

i bought some coins in a "blind" auction it promised 3-5 coins at least 1 PCGS or NGC graded and at least 1 morgan ms64 or better. the rest of the coins would be graded by such companies as... ICG (no problem), halmark (who?), SEGS (SGS?)anyway most of you know how this will end! The PCGS coin was a 1974 pf69 cameo...nickel. these were the rest of the coins. 1968 ms67rd....yeah right. this coin is a bodybag at any other grader. the 1974-p ms66 ike looks like it had a rust remover job. cant

coins labled wrong?

Platinum coins graded and labled as gold? I'm sure this isnt the first time but I sent in 2 2005 platinum $25 coins and they came back graded as gold coins?? I thought they looked at them when they graded? Any one know what the best thing to do with them?

One more thing,

And this is going to crack you up...! I have gone so far as to send in NGC encapsulated coins I've purchase, to NGC strictly for imaging. Just so I can include pictures that have some photographic uniformity..... it even cracks me up.... This is tooooo much fun. Steve 2751261_01

Mike King said a mouth full!!!

I have to tell you, I agree with everything Mike said, but let me take this a bit further still. I just can't help myself...... For me and most other collectors, it is about the coins. Why else would I go out of my way to collect tokens and medals that seem to fit into the theme of my collection. Or why would anyone be interested in an old Navy Token. Because they are not slabbed, I cannot show or register many of my coins and so called dollars as a part of my signature set "War and Conflict

Furthermore

I'll take advantage of being able to write down my thoughts and experiences with this instant publishing adventure. Thank you NGC. Taking being tested and passivity a step further...and the idea that encapsulated grading can be a fools road to eye appeal...Yes, it can be. That's not denying the impeccable beauty in high grade mint state coins, and the intrinsic difficulties of finding premium quality gems, but this is not the be-all and the end-all.Example:I was bidding on an MS62 Nova Consell

World's Fair of Money

My eyes were like saucers when I saw all the vendors tables. And I almost didn't find anything to buy!!! Well, coin shows sure have changed since 1965. Friday, I attended the ANA World's Fair of Money and let me tell you there were more coins in one place than I have ever seen (excluding US Mint tours)! Recently, I decided to work on a 1899 Mint set. This Mint set is going to be harder than I expected to complete. I came to that realiziation when after going to most of the tables, I saw less

NGC and NCS working together really works

Upgrade in MS grades I recently sent in several coins that were purchased many years ago to NGC and two of the group came back with a note attached. It stated that NGC had identified these as good coins for conservation by NCS. I was not sure if they would be worth sending in to NCS or not. I finally sent them in, and recently received them back. One was a 1851 1/2 cent graded that had graded MS 62. That coin upgraded to MS 63. The other was a proof Liberty 5? that had graded PF62. The nickel

Patience is NOT one of My Virtues

Mailed Coins for Consignment in May..first check will be mailed next week...sigh I am not a patient person by nature, in fact coin collecting for the most part has been good for this character flaw. It has taught me the patience/selectiveness in waiting for those hard to fill slots, coins in the value/cost range, grade ranges..and of course- budget range. In May I decided that I would consign some of my collection to liquidate money for upgrades/additions to a particular set I want to finish.
